Is my USB port over clocked?

I have a shuttle AK37GT with a 1700+ tbred B.

The system runs fine under Windows 98 at 1800mhz with the cpu multiplier at 13.5 and dram speed at 166.

However if I set the cpu multiplier to 11 and the FSB to 166 and the FSB divider to 5 then my USB mouse will not run in dos mode.

Am I over clocking the USB port with the FSB at 166/5 ?

if it's 166/5 => 33MHz which is the standard PCI bus speed.

did your USB mouse work in DOS previously? could be a driver issue?

The usb mouse works fine in windows 98 no matter what timings I use. It runs in dos mode at 133/4 but it will not run in dos mode at 166/5. I assume that it should be running at 33mhz either way. That's why I was wondering what sets the usb clock.

usb is part of pci bus

is it optical or ball?
if its optical, does it receive power when its 166/5?

try another mouse?
try anohter port?
try mouse in another friends oced system?
...i think thats it..

Thanks for the suggestions.

The mouse is optical it appears to receive power because it lights up when moved but the cursor dosn't move.

I tried another mouse although they are both Logitech opticals. I dont have a usb ball mouse to try.

Another port didn't work.

I don't have any friends that oc.

I tried running the same mouse with a ps2 adapter on the ps2 port and it works fine at 166/5.

Im starting to think it's a mother board problem. I knew I should have stuck with Abit instead of trying this Shuttle.

Dont jump to conclusions!

Wish I had some help, but I have no idea. Good luck

check your PCI bus speed in Sandra or equivalent.

i was told "the KT333 chipset supports the PCI 1/5 multiplier" i learned the hard way that "supporting" and "implementing" are two different things!!

your USB/PCI may be 41.5MHz!!:Q

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking the pci bus speed. Truthfully I didn't know that I could. I am unfamiliar with Sandra. A quick search turned up SiSoftware, is that what your are refering to?

By the way my AK37GT motherboard uses the KT400 not the KT333. I would like to think VIA worked out any divider issues with this chipset but I guess we'll find out.

It may be a day or two before I get back to that machine but I will let you know what turns up.

Thanks.

I downloaded Sandra.

It is reporting:
PCI @ 1/5x : 33Mhz
USB controller 1-3 Model: "unknown" , speed = 48 Mhz.

If I change the FSB speed the USB speed remains at 48Mhz.

Is that speed normal or is Sandra mis-reporting it?

Shuttle had a new bios revision on there site. I downloaded and flashed version s00t and my problem is solved.

Mouse works great in dosmode and Prime 95 ran all night with zero errors at 166x11.

Time to go higher.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
