Is my stick of Crucial RAM dead?!

Senior member
Well, I've been having problems with my K7V+. It, apparently blew up becuase I had my stick of RAM in backwards; what's the right way to
put in a stick of RAM? Also, I checked through every single one of my components and there seems to be no damage, except for one burnt
contact on the RAM (and only one side). Does that mean this RAM is dead? If so, how would I use the warranty that comes with a stick of
Crucial RAM?

RAM fits in only when you have it positioned correctly. All you had to do is look at the slot allignment on the DIMM slot and your RAM... you have to push firmly and fairly hard. When it's in all the way, the white tabs on either side of the DIMM bank will lock into place.

So you screw up and expect to use the warranty which is meant to cover defective product (not USER ERROR).:frown::|

Why in the world would you expect a manafacture to exchange your RAM because you screwed it up? If you look at the ram and the socket you should be able to see which way it goes in by the slot keys.

Yes, crucial will replace your dead ram, even if you put it in backwards. I recall there was a thread here about stupid things we did...it seems a lot of people put ram in backwards, especially ddr.

Yes, I'm stupid... it's been a while since I've had to build a computer - I was used to messing around with SDRAM. I couldn't see much of
anything inside the case. Oh well, at least Crucial will replace the RAM even for stupidity... just for your information - they fit in just fine either
way - it wasn't difficult at all to just slip it on backwards (as easy as the right way). The RAM just fits right in backwards and the white tabs on
either side do snap in. But alright, thanks.

Is this DDR RAM?

If so, I don't see how you could possibly manage to put it in backwards. It's keyed about 3/8" off-center so if you flip it around 180 degrees the key will be offset almost 3/4". There's just no way you could get that stick mounted far enough into the DIMM slot to snap the tabs in. It had to have been partially mounted into the slot at best.

How could you but DDR in backwards?....its Keyed so there is no way you could put it in with out bending the MB or the RAM module......
Seem like it was a motheroboard with defective Ram sockets.

you're using the dragon motherboard right?
if so, crucial ddr ram and the dragon don't go together well.
there's nothing wrong with the RAM.

K7V+...I think we're talkin SDRAM, but still, there's no way to force it in place...it's also keyed to prevent this.

Hm... no, it's very possible - I don't know - maybe it's my K7V+ mobo, or all of them are like this. But for my mobo and my stick of Crucial I can
VERY easily put it either way without any problem. It wasn't partially in either, it went in and the white tabs snapped right into it. No problems
whatsoever (besides the fact that it was in backwards).

Why exactly doesn't K7V+ and Crucial go well together? Are you sure there's nothing wrong with the RAM? I mean I DID put it in backwards
and one of the gold contacts is burned on one side.

Hey, Tung

How is it, that you figure Dragon Boards and Crucial DDR don't go together?? Just curious, since mine seems to be working just fine.
Best wishes,
olin🙁

Because of this thread, i opened my computer and looked at my dragon mobo and my stick of DDR. After multiple attempts, i have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to put the RAM in backwards.

Jeez, people, give him a break. To quote Jesus, "Let those who have never had any hardware installation problems cast the first stone." We've all screwed up on something, and most of the time it was probably our own faults. It would be nice if we here at Anandtech were a little more supportive. If he says he put it in backwards, then my guess is that somehow he managed to put it in backwards.

Oh, and to the warranty not covering user error, I believe that warranties should cover user error, to an extent. For example, many auto manufacturers have to do recalls on their cars for safety reasons, since one safety feature or another doesn't work (ahem...Ford and Firestone). After all, airbags are still required to pop out when a dumb-ass driver rams their car into a brick wall. Just because it is user error does not mean that the manufacturer can walk away clean. If figgypower managed to stick his RAM in backwards, then either Crucial or his mobo manufacturer failed to prevent it. They share the blame just like a car manufacturer shares the blame when the dumb-ass's airbag doesn't inflate.

ehrm yes ???

What are you talking about ?

Crucial is Micron btw....

Edit:

The question is not whether it's *possible* to (somehow...) put a rams stick in the wrong way...i MIGHT believe that some people actually do that...

The question rather is why some people (if they're already messing with their boards) seem to have problems seeing the notch on the ram stick (left ? or right ?)....and seeing the same notch in the ram socket on the board....thus helping the "alignment" of the ram stick before putting it in.

That's almost as bizarre as someone saying he has problems switching on the comp (or other "devices") since he doesnt know the difference between the "O" and "1" symbols on the switch.....

Well, it's very possible. If you'd like me to stick in my stick of DDR RAM in backwards, take a picture, and then post it for all to see - I will. Why
do people make these mistakes? Well, I could go on whining about how the case is dark, I didn't see any instructions on it, blah blah, but I
already admitted it was pure stupidity on my part.

You're not the only one on this board who has sent something to the silicon graveyard, and don't let anyone tell you differently! I've had my share of failures, and anyone who says user error is 100% preventable just hasn't monkeyed around enough. That's why pencils have erasers...If only hardware had something like that 😉
