Is my router old and getting flooded?

I have the newest firmware available through linksys, however, when I try to play Team Fortress 2 through steam I lose internet connection during the servers refreshing. Also, if I attempt to visit housingmaps.com (google maps and craigslist aggregator mashup) my router gives out. All the lights are still blinking, but my connection goes to "local only".

I can, at this point, plug my computer directly into my wall (wired, shared "highi-speed" ethernet in my condo) and will be back online. I have to wait about 15minutes or so to plug the router back in for it to work.

Is this because I have an older router? Should I just pony up the cash for a new one?

Also do a scan for viruses/worms. It is possible you're overloading it with that activity and 3rd party firmware could help.

What type of internet connection do you have?

I have had this type of behavior caused by a failed/failing DSL modem.

"Free High-Speed Internet"

I think its handful of DSL lines being shared by 100+ units or so.

www.tenant-internet.com is the website for it.

It could be that it just can't keep up. Although I haven't had the problem on my WRT54G v5.. I did see it on my older wired linksys (looks the same as the WRT, but without the antennas). Whenever I would start using bittorrent, the router would shut down, and reboot. Worked fine the rest of the time. I tried to RMA it and the replacement did the same thing. Might just be a slow processor or something.

It could be a problem with the refreshing and the type of connection that you have.

You probably are already behind a Router and some type of authentication server.

Are you using the Linksys as a Router, or just as an Access Point?

Do you have all of the router settings set back to default? If not, try this. This could be something like a QoS issue. Also, from my personal experiences and those of my friends, I would recommend DD-WRT over Tomato. It brings several more features to the table, a huge community, and rock-solid stability.
