Hi. I posted this on a linksys forum but got no response so here goes - I bought a WRT54GS and I can't access the config page supposedly at 192.168.1.1. The LEDs light up when i power it on but that's the only sign of life it shows. I tried different NICs, patch cables and crossover cables, different operating systems, etc... I also tried accessing it wirelessly but i see no linksys ID on the list of 802.11x networks. Any ideas how I can access this thing? Or do i have a dud?

I could be wrong but don't you first need to run the setup from the linksys CD which allows basic configuration of the device - once this has been done you should then be able to access it via the web interface

I've never used their CDs that come with it.

Do you get a response when you ping that address?

Open a cmd prompt and type: IPCONFIG /ALL
Tell us what it says for your IP address.

The manual for the router says that the first time you install it you should run the setup from the CD. I've used a linksys wireless access point before which worked in the same way. If the web interface isn't working it must be worth a try.

Nah. Zick is right. Try using a predefined IP address of 192.168.1.100.

I threw that CD in the trash thinking "Why would i need a CD to use a router?.."

I don't get a ping reply... actually I don't recieve any packets from it whatsoever (according to ethereal, tcpdump). If i leave the client on DHCP mode i don't get an IP address so windows reports "limited or no connectivity" and assigns a 169.x . Linux just times out waiting for server. I assigned the client to 192.168.1.2 manually but still nothing.

Yea, I have tried resetting the router and the clients.

This is starting to annoy me... the ethernet link lights come on at both ends and Linux reports "eth1 up 100Mbps full-duplex etc" ... it's almost as if it's a software problem, but what could be wrong with the factory software?

Thanks for the help btw

To run setup without the CD, go to www.linksys.com/connect, click on NetSet Assistant, and run it while online (without the router in the loop). Follow the simple instructions and the site will determine what is needed to configure your router, tell you to plug the router in, and take care of configuration. If that doesn't work, try a hard reset of the router and then run the web configuration utility. Tech support says the web utility is more robust than the CD anyway.

As far as the cd, I've never needed to run that cd. Your computer should automatically obtain an IP address of 192.168.1.100 and then just try going to http://192.168.1.1 If that's not working, it's likely you have a bad router. All the cd does is allow a simple way of configuring the router without going through the web based management

Hahahaha, right, many netgear routers don't have AES or a lot of the other features the Linksys will have.

I don't think i'll be running any linksys software on my pc, it can't do anything if the router is completely non-responsive and it might might mess up other settings.

I reckon its pretty much dead, or at least the ethernet on it is dead. Tempted to do the serial port mod and see if i can access that way, but should probably just return it. I'll get a simple access point with WPA, thats all i needed anyway - already got a good router.
