Is my Radeon 8500 obsolete?

its only obsolete when there is a game on the shelf that you really want to purchase, but the specs for the game say it requires a Radeon 9700.

It's obsolete when it doesn't hold up to your minimum desired quality and resoltution settings and frame rates.

I have an 8500, just got it in January...it better not be obsolete!! 😉

It's only obsolete in that it's not the fastest card out there.
but, I got it because it'll run the games I like(UT, 2K3, Max Payne...) and the price was right.

Only you can make the decision whether a card is obsolete as you'll have different standards to everyone else.

Personally I voted for six months.

Interesting.

I have a feeling that this card is on it's way out...I'm struggling to hit 30fps in many current games at 1280x1024.

Mine is running Raven Shield just fine for me.
I won't be upgrading for awhile, at least until the next generation after the 9800...

Ok, I'll ask...

What monitor you using? 1280x1024 is my photo editing res. I game a 1024x768 as a rule. No probs at all with my AIW 8500DV. And it's slower than the rest of the 8500's. For gaming, I don't think I'd 1280 unless I got a 21" monitor. Everything looks beautiful on my 17" Trinitron at 1024.

But if that's the res you want to play at, then you need a GF4Ti or 9700 (or it's brethren... 9500, 9800).

I have a 8500LE@315/315 now which scores 11000+ in 3Dmark2k1se and Delta Force: Blackhawk Down is a slide show@1024x768x32 with everything on high in the game and AS&AF on application preference in the display properties so I'd have to say yes, it's obsolete for me already. I got in on the 79$ ti4200 deal so I'll have to see if overclocking it will give enough of a boost or if it's going in the FS/FT forum and it's time for a 9500pro.

I'm running a 22" Viewsonic p220f...it's great. I wish I could run all of my games at 1600x1200, but I guess that's going to have to wait. 1024x768 looks too grainy.

My 8500 was a gift almost a year ago now. It's been great, both on my old Viewsonic 17" CRT and (also a gift) newer Viewsonic 19" (flat) CRT. I imagine it should be able to limp its way through DOOM 3 with enough CPU to back it up, so I don't expect to upgrade any time soon. Thus, I voted for the last option.

Llike mentioned before, it depends what you use it for. I don't play at 1280x1024 on my 17" monitor. I use 1024x768 and once I upgrade my card it'll stay the same but with AA and AF.

If you dont play video games (which I'm sure you do,) then the card should not be obsolete for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Lately, I've just been using my 8500 for video editing and watching movies and sh1t. I luv the image quality my 8500 is capable of.
