Is my PSU gonna hold up after my upgrades

My PSU:
*** Thermaltake 420 W ATX PSU -- 12V = 18A up to 216W / 3.3V = 30A + 5V = 40A up to 220W

New system:
AMD Opteron 165 -- hope to get it up to about 2.2 GHz
ASUS A8R-MVP
Radeon X850XT 256MB
2 x 512MB DDR @ CL 2.5
3 x 160 GB HDD (PATA) -- 1 WD, 2 Seagate
DVD-ROM
DVD-RW
Audigy 2 ZS
PCI IDE RAID Controller

I've got 4 case fans (80mm) on this machine so cooling shouldn't be a problem.

 
Maybe, but you'll be running rather close to it's limit. I'd think hard about getting a 450W fortron ($50) as i don't like the TT PSU range.
 
That's a fairly robust system you're building, i'd seriously look at buying a new power supply. I've been a long time fan of Enermax products and have a 485W NoiseTaker at the moment. I like the modular cable design of the Liberty series but it's a tad pricey for me.
 
it will probably work. but be prepared to get a new PS if you run into problems (ie. system instability, cold boot problems.. signs your current powersupply isnt cutting it)
 
I bought me the Enermax Liberty 500w. It was a little more than what I wanted to pay in the scheme of things ...it is what I wanted in a PSU. High Effeciency and Modular. It is a great unit. I got mine from the Egg ...110$
 
ok.... i was gonna pass that PSU on to one of my other machines but this upgrade had to happen way sooner than expected 'cos my 9800 crapped out on me. I'll get a betta PSU in about 3-4 mo (500Wish)... think it will hold till then? will not OCing the CPU from 1.8 to 2.2 help a lot?

You don't need a PSU with more power you just need a better PSU. A 350-400 watt Seasonic or Forton-Source would be a great choice and give you plenty of power.
 
It's not the total wattage that is important. It is how much amperage is supplied on what rails. The reason your PSU most likely will not be enough is because of the 18A on the +12v rail. My 400w Fortron has 34A between the two 12v rails (+12V1@18A & +12V2@16A).

Agreed, 18A on the 12v rail is pathetic for a 420watt PSU.

I have this PSU. Check out my Anandtech System Rigs Profile if you are interested in knowing what I run. From personal experience, I will tell you that I think it will hold up. However, you will have to overvolt more than probably necessary with a better PSU if you OC. My VCore dips to 1.37V from 1.4V a lot of times. I think I could get away with just setting the VCore to 1.375V using a good PSU, but instead I have to turn it up a bit to avoid system instability due to the power dropping too much.

All in all, it's a decent enough PSU for the money, and I am going to be forthcoming and say that part of what appeals to me about this TT product is the sleeving (I have a windowed case, plus it helps with airflow). However, if you have the money and want to have some serious OC potential, find something from a better manufacturer, like Enermax, Antec, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, OCZ, etc.
