Is my processor overclocked?

Hey guys. For those of you who don't know, I've had an extraordinarily hard time keeping my processor cool over the course of me owning it. I finally stopped getting my computer to lock up afer re-applying Arctic Silver for the Nth time, maybe I did it right his time. ;) However, I have a GlobalWin 6800 rpm HSF combo and it's STILL in the 48-52C range.

Anyways I was tinkering around with Direct X diagnostic utility when I noticed it's reporting my processor speed to be anywhere from 958 Mhz to 966 Mhz (I have a T-bird 950). Is this normal? The heat this thing kicks out is pretty unbelievable too... it's kinda like a mini-space heater in the back. ;) So there's never anything I've really done to overclock this thing but I suppose it's possible I bought one. I did buy this processor from Comp-U-Plus, which is supposed to be a pretty good vendor. All the switches on my motherboard are factory standard (Asus A7V) so nothing wrong there... Anyway, help me if you can cause this thing can REALLY heat up a room if I leave it on.

I dont think you've bought an overclocked processor. Why dont u go and check what the multiplier and fsb is set at in the bios, and also check what the voltage is set to.

CPU Frequency (I believe that's FSB?) was 100 Mhz. Voltage was 1.5V and the multiplier was 9.5x.

Yeah voltage is suppose to be 1.75v unless the 950's are different from the 1ghz+ but I doubt it'd be that much lower.

Sounds like the hsf might not be on properly or making good enough contact. Or the voltage might not be setting correctly...

But also 48-52C I don't think would make it freeze. I'd say there's many people who have their Tbirds running at that temp fine.

its not uncommon for the FSB frequency to vary slghtly.

On my BX6R2 (w/ celeron 300a), when I set the FSB to 103, it has changed between 102 and 104.

I get CPU speeds between 459 and 468, where it is supposed to be 463.5

That temperature really isn't something to worry about. Also consider your setting. If you live in a warm/hot place (considering it is the summer), your CPU will naturally be hotter.

My tbird 900 runs at 57C under load (which is always, the aliens ARE out there).. I really don't think you have a problem. Remember that the A7V reports more realistic temps (higher) than other socket A mobo's. Check out Mikewarrior's sig for info on this stuff. I really don't think you should worry. If you had an abit motherboard or something else you're temps would probably report about ten C lower. Dont' sweat it, if you're comp is freezing up, the cpu temp isn't the problem. I have a foriegn student staying in my house, and his tbird was at like 72 under load and he wasn't worried (now he had random freeze up during games though).. he didn't have any case fans or anything.. just the stock cooler. I set him up though, now he's at levels like mine (we both have A7V too), and we're both stable.. later.

Well I haven't had any lock ups in awhile, which is kinda reassuring. ;) This is, yes a pretty hot enviornment for this computer compared to at school where the a/c is blasting pretty good. ;)

I WAS however, getting heat related lock-ups with an old Cooler Master HSF that came with the case. It would lock up every time just about on start up. Upon closer inspection, the heat sink didn't quite cover the whole socket. *sigh* I do, however, need to replace this Delta fan on this GlobalWin heat sink. It truly does sound like a blow dryer. ;) Anyone have any suggestions for some good, efficient fans that aren't too loud?

*wonders why he used the wink thingie so much in that last post...*

Oh, and you're right it was 1.75V. *lol* I went back and checked it. It was whatever the default value was, I remembered that much.

what's your case cooling like? you need at least one intake and one exhaust fan in your case if you don't have such a setup already. of course, even the best heatsink/fan with arctic silver won't do sh*t if your case is all hot air.

I would advise everyone here to upgrade to latest version of asus probe or switch to mbm. I was originally getting temps near 57 when using the version that came with my board. When i updated it, I was magically running 10 degrees cooler. Bios is also a better source of temp readings. I'm doing a pretty heavy overclock with a soso heatsink and only one case fan, and I still don't go beyond 52. Anywhere near 60 without heavy overclocking sounds like a bad reading.

My case cooling:

One exhaust fan
One Front Case fan (which is an intake fan, right... at least the way I have it set up)
Fan on the power supply (intake)

I was thinking maybe I didn't have enough air coming into the case but I'm not entirely sure about that.
