Is my old-ish PC ready for 8x DVD recording?

I have a kinda-old (PIII-750MHz) PC with the regular ATAPI-33 interface to a 20GB HDD... I just got myself a brand new LiteOn 8x DVD+/- burner...

I realize I can find the answer myself by risking a few coasters, but is there a quick way to tell what's the highest speed my PC will be able to record DVD's at ??

A quick check in Nero shows me that 8x DVD speed is 11,080KB/sec...so in theory, as long as your hard drive can sustain a transfer rate of 11mb/sec or so, you should be fine. And that's not really that fast...I think even an old 3GB and 8GB hard drive I had could do at least 8 or 9MB/sec.

I run the same burner on a AMD K6-III 450 system.

Using Roxio 6, I can burn anywhere from 5x to 8x. Haven't burnt a coaster yet. This is using smart burn setting in Roxio. This lets the burning program (Roxio) decide what the best available burning speed should be.

Most burners I have looked at say they require 800 Mhz or faster, but 750 may be close enough.

i'm not sure that the CPU speed is a critical element here...
i'm not planning to surf the web and run SETI and play Doom while I burn a DVD so I'm sure 750 MHz is plenty enough....😀

Who said anything about doom? I am saying that DVD burners I have seen require 800 MHz. Just to burn DVDs. Not to play doom while burning DVDs, etc. It is never a good idea to run anything while burning anyway, as the DVD burner will take up your entire bus and could cause you to make a coaster if you try to run anything else. If you want to buy one, go ahead, but if it doesn't work, you will know why. I would buy it from a retail store that will give you a full refund (no restocking fee) if you return it within 14 days.

Well, would it even matter if the HD couldn't keep up? Doesn't that burner have burnproof to prevent underruns? If so, you shouldn't be making any coasters because of the other components inability to keep up.
