Is My Network Compromised?

Yesterday I asked the question if reaching the 250gig cap is normal for 3 people in a home which is two weeks into the month, to see if anything fishy was going on with my network but I woke up this morning to find out that 48gigs of data was used up again! I just don't see how that is possible for one day's usage.

Our usage for yesterday was surfing, watching HD streams, and games. The only thing that might have put a dent into 48gigs of dl would be streaming but
it was just one person watching his in HD and maybe 6 hours at most.

I'm using powerline adapters for my network. Link here is to the brand and model that I am using. I am thinking that these powerline adapters might be the cause of the leak. I was never once instructed to use a password when setting these things up, it was just a plug and play. Could these things be the cause?

I also have two wireless routers in my home. One provided by suddenlink and the other is a Linksys WRT54GS2 but I have a problem logging into the linksys. The IP address 192.168.1.1 does not work. Does it not work because someone hacked that router or does it not work because I am on powerline adapters?

The other router, modem actually, in my home provided by suddenlink is a Hightrontechnology device with model number CGN. I can actually access that modem through my powerline adaptors so maybe it is my linksys router that is compromised?

I don't think the powerline adapters would interfere with your ability to connect to the Linksys router. They typically operate on a different OSI layer. A powerline adapter kit is usually paired from the factory.

Do a factory reset on the Linksys router. Then, set it up again from scratch. Use the web interface to configure your settings. Don't install Linksys bloatware on your computer(s). Download the latest firmware from the Linksys website and upload it to your router.

Disable WPS (push button pairing). Use WPA2-PSK security with AES.

Nevermind, i just spoke to my cousin and he downloaded a game called AEON. I just checked the game files and they were 44 gigs big.

The 250gig cap needs to go! Everything is in the cloud today.

Maybe you could get a business line. They generally don't have caps, and you get the benefit of a static ip. Bandwidth is sometimes lower, but still pretty good. I'd rather have quantity with a decent speed than restrictions and a faster than typically used speed.

Thanks, i'll look into that. Generally, how much is a business line?

Here's a link for Comcast...

http://business.comcast.com/Internet/business-internet/plans-pricing

It may give you an idea of what to expect from whoever you use(if available). Keep in mind that you're getting far fewer restrictions. Setting up servers, and internet services is ok, and not just an under the table activity. You may be able to do something interesting with the extra money you'd be spending. Get one of the higher packages, and sell backup service to friends and family for a small cost. It'll take some of the bite out of the expense.

Thanks. Seems like the pricing is very similar to what I'm paying now. Can't speak to someone from sunndenlink until tomorrow though. Thanks again for the help.
