Is my motherboard fried?

JEDI

Lifer
today i turned on my desktop like i have done for the past year. but the difference is that i began to smell something burning, like circuitry.

then the monitor went out. then the off button on the desktop wouldnt work. i had to pull the power plug.

After a few min i turned it on again, but nothing appears on the screen (no beeps). and the power button still doesnt work. i had to pull the plug.

i have a ECS board w/Sempron 2600 (Fry's electronics combo special).

the memory and graphics card are fine since i tested that in my spare pc.

but the spare pc does not accept semprons.

i moved the spare pc's cpu (duron 850) to the main desktop, and it still exhited the same behavior. (nothing appears on screen, power button wont turn it off, had to pull plug.)

since the spare cpu doesnt work in the ecs board, does that mean the ecs board is dead?

check your mobo for signs of burns (ie blown capacitor, resistor or popped chips), or you can use your nose to trace the smell of what ever is burned.
Last time it happened to me only one of the hard drive's controller circuit was burned shutting the system down. After replacing the hard drive and re-installing everything was back up.

Sniff around the PSU. Usually the first thing to fry, short of something connected wrong on the mobo.

Power Supply is usually the first component that goes - also the smelliest. I have had several MBs blow - an MSI and two ECS. As far as P/S blown - over 10 in computers I have built. I used PowMax in most of the cheap systems at one time. I can't believe that about 10 are still running. PowMax was the best of the budget/cheapo PS at one time - they truly sucked, but less so then other famously underachieving PS like Deer.

All the blown HD's never smelled. The died silent, odorless deaths.

Oh deer!

Nothing like the smell of roasting electrolytics in the morning. Too bad they're rather lacking in copper 'cuz they smell delicious!

i unplugged everything from the mobo. so i have only the bare basics, which is the video card and memory.

turn on the computer, nothing pops up on the monitor, and i cant turn off the computer via the off button so i pull the plug.

i take the power supply from my backup computer and put it in the blown computer. same thing.

so i'm thinking it's either the mobo or the chip.

How long is the warrenty of ECS boards? (k7vta3)?

lol not long. i've had a few of those combos too.. k7s5a and vta3... one of them...the s5a pooped out on me too. others still runnin fine. its the gamble u take when the m/b is essentially free with chip purchase.. does the psu power up the other pc?

Ive built a couple of the k7s5a systems over the years... Ironically the 1st revision of the board was the one that lasted the longest 4 years. All the newer ones died pretty quickly.
