Is my monitor going bad? UPDATE: Things are back to normal?! PLS READ!

I have a Sony G400 19", and the left side of the monitor is turning this light purple color. It is like that no matter what resolution I set it as, at what refresh rate, and I even swapped out the video card. Just curious if I should look for a good deal on a monitor because this one might die soon.

Man, this really blows. So I am assuming there is pretty much nothing I can do to make things better, huh?

Probably not.
Don't even think of trying to fix this yourself.
The voltages inside a monitor can kill you quick.
Unless you know of a TV repair shop that works on monitors cheap it's not really worth it.
If the tube is bad it'll be cheaper to buy a new monitor by the time you get done adding up parts and labor.

My friend had a monitor that had strange color banding along the sides. An electronic shop that worked with monitors fixed it for him for $60 and it worked perfect after that. I had my monitor fixed for hardly anything when my resolutions were not working correctly. It's probably a small part that doesn't cost much, but the labor will be the most.

At the very least, have an estimate done cause it doesn't hurt to check. If it was a cheap 15" monitor or even a low quality 17" monitor I would say forget it, but since it's a Sony 19", it's worth it to try to fix it. Just don't try fixing it yourself if you don't know much about monitors and electronics. I would say that the monitor is starting to die though and it will not fix itself so get it checked out.

With little hope left after reading all of your replies, as well as my friends telling me pretty much the same thing, I went to the Sony website to look for the support number, maybe just maybe they would either tell me there would be something I can do, or they would fix it for me for free. Well, at their support website, there is a self-test option for my monitor. I proceeded with the directions on the page. Turn off monitor, unplug my monitor from PC, turn on monitor, hold right arrow key for two seconds, and the blink light should indicate whether there was something wrong or not. Well, the light indicated there was nothing wrong. While not look very carefully, I proceeded to use my computer, only to noticed like 20 minutes later, the purple color was GONE! My monitor now looks just FINE!?

I am happy, but I know even though things are back to normal, that purple color was not a good sign. My friends still told me that this might just be a temporary thing, and that my monitor is going to go bad sooner or later. What do you guys think? Is it inevitable? Thanks again for the replies!

That's good news.
All monitors will go bad eventually.
They get dimmer and dimmer or start producing funny colors.
It's inevitable. Some do it faster than others.

😀

I have the same monitor. You should check to make sure it's set to "auto degauss" on start-up. If it isn't you will get them purple corners. Sounds like that test you did may have reset the defaults as well.

This was probably a problem with magnetism - perhaps a non-shielded speaker placed too close to the monitor. Degaussing fixes this, but pay attention to what is close to the monitor - magnets, electric motors, high current electrical lines, etc.

Very true....

The speakers may have gotten repositioned with the "unplug/replug" so that they are now further away from the monitor.

I sure hope you are rght. I happened to have some speakers (unshielded or not I don't know) next to my monitor, and the purple color didn't appear until I placed the speakers there. I moved them away now, and degaussed my monitor. Now everything looks good.... I hope that was it... thanks guys! I really appreciate it!!
