Plugged the my monitor into my second comp to upload some seti blocks and the picture only filled half the screen, strange i thought, as the machine is not in a case i thought i must have dislodged the vid card from the agp slot as its not held in place by thhe case so i rebooted the machine, everything looked good untill it loaded windows where i was greeted with a very garbled screen moving in and out and making a high pitched noise, the sort of efect you get when you run a monitor at a res its not designed for, after some messing about i found it to work at lower resolutions / refresh rates, the best i am able to run now is 1152 x 864 x 16 bit, i was using 1280 x 1024 x 100hz, i was also using the refresh rate fix proggy as on xp it only lets me set to 75 max as standard, when this proggy is run it says i can run 120 hz where as the max rate for that res is 100, i set every res to max and checked in the propertys and that displayed 100, the only thing i can think of is that it was running at 120hz? the osd said the vertical refresh was 100 and horizontal was a little higher.
the monitor is a iiyama vision master pro 451 which from all reports are very unrealiable :(
anyhow my thoughts are RMA time :( and what with christmas next week i might not get it replaced till the new year ;(

Either the monitor or the card. The symptoms make me think it's the monitor. Got another one handy?

If the monitor runs at lower resolutions odds are there is no problem with the monitor. It sounds like you are running the monitor above its horizontal or vertical scan range at the higher resolutions.

Also it is NOT a good idea to run without a case. The return grounds in the video cable often use the chassis ground as their return path. This could create problems in the monitor or impact the video displayed or interere with other electronic equipment nearby.

if you went over the recommended settings for the monitor (resolution/hertz ratio) then you could have done some permanent damage. Try going into your monitor settings and regause, recall, etc. Also change the settings in windows to the lower possible and see how that works. If all else fails, refer to the manual.

Set the resolution to a standard 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz to start. Max refresh at 1600 x 1200 is 92Hz. Max refresh at 1280 x 1024 is 106Hz. If you try 120Hz the symtoms you describe make sence.

If you do not have the option to go above 1280 x 1024 at 75 it is most likly a problem with your video card drivers or the monitor you have selected. Also install the monitors INF file (drivers).

You may not have a problem but you are certainly askng for one.
