Is my mobo toast?

Hey guys, was building my first system and I screwed up big time. The mobo is an Abit NF7-M.

I was in the bios changing a couple of settings (setting the clock speed right) and chose to save/exit...well, it exited, and I thought it was frozen (sat at a black screen). I might add that it was at a black screen for probably 30 seconds when I decided to reset it. So I reset it. It boots back up and tells me 'Do NOT POWER DOWN while writing to BIOS' or something close to that. I reset once again, and nothing...nothing on the screen, no beeps..

I've tried the jumper setting to clear CMOS..nothing. I've tried hitting insert on startup..nothing.

Is my bios completely trashed or is there anything I can do to save it? :(

Sounds like you inadvertantly did some flashing of your bios and then interrupted the process. I would reccomend reseating everything in the machine, take out the CPU, memory, all your perpherial cards and stuff and letting it set a few minutes then trying again. If you did interrupt the flashing process, its possible the boards CMOS chip is hosed. Try taking out the battery, letting it set for about an hour. If you cant get it back up and running check here: http://www.abit-usa.com/abitparts/bios_chip_4.php you can buy a replacement BIOS chip straight from ABIT. I would call them before ordering one to make sure everything will be kosher.

Might try removing the CMOS battery (if you feel comfortable with that) for a long period as suggested above. However, I doubt it will work. But might as well try.

Otherwise call abit if still under warranty and explain. See if maybe they'll RMA it.

Otherwise I think you'll better off having someone else fix it for you. Whether it be a local shop or abit. I feel as it's your first build, the proceedures to fix it (blind flash, changing BIOS chip etc) are better to someone more experienced.

I put in a request for an RMA at the online site..I will see what happens.

Taking out the battery had no effect...it still did absolutely nothing.

Edit: They approved it for an RMA. Now I just get to wait until they ship me a new one..
