Is my mobo dead??

I'm attempting to upgrade the mobo, cpu, and memory in an older system. I installed the a Chaintech VNF-250 and an AMD Sempron 64 2800+. The system booted fine on the first try, I was able to change some BIOS settings, save, and reboot.

I then tried flashing the BIOS to the newer version that supports the Sempron-64 chips. The flash was successful (or so it claimed) and the system rebooted fine. I went into the BIOS and did a "Load Optimized Defaults", then tried to save and exit. When I hit 'y' to confirm and then enter, the machine froze. After about 2 or 3 minutes, I had to power the system down.

Now it won't boot.

With everything connected, I get the following:

- The CD-ROM light flashes quickly 8 times, then pauses for a second, then flashes 8 times, pauses, and so on.
- The LAN light (integrated LANon mobo) flashes every second.
- The CPU fan spins up fine.
- The monitor does not come out of power save mode.
- The keyboard light does light up.
- No beeps from the speaker.

I have since stripped the system down to the mobo and cpu (no memory, vid card, etc). The only things that happen at power on are the keyboard light comes on and the cpu fan spins. Nothing else.

It's getting late tonight. I am going to try to swap power supplies tomorrow, but this psu has been working great for about a year now in the older system.

I'm open to any other suggestions . . . Thanks in advance.

Try taking CMOS battery out for a few hours then put it back in and try again.

I tried clearing the CMOS with by switching the jumper several times, no difference. I will try removing the battery and see what happens.

The speaker is connected, but no beep.

Thanks.

tpspeier,

Try the following:
1) Unplug the power cord then remove the back up battery
2) Short the jumper to clear your CMOS for 5-10 seconds
3) Remove the jumper and put it back to original (default) position
4) Put the battery back
5) Ensure you have a minimal system, CPU, RAM, video card. Then boot up your system
6) If BIOS screen pops up, go into setup menu, if not go to 911
7) Load Optimize Default option
8) Save and exit
9) Press F8 a few time before you get into Windows
10) Select Safe Mode option
11) @ Safe mode windows, uninstall all your nvidia & other drivers used prior to BIOS upgrade
12) Have the driver CD that came with the motherboard ready and reboot in to normal mode widnows
13) Windows should pop up with Found New Hardware message(s). You can either ignore the message (leave them alone) and install the drivers from your CD.
14) Reboot - and you should be all set.

911 - Order a new BIOS chip and replace the one that you have, but this should be your last resource.

GOOD luck

Thanks everyone for your help. I tried everything and still no go. I'm going to try to RMA the board through Chaintech. If that fails I'll have to order a new BIOS.

Thanks again.
