I just built my first computer I used a ECS P4M800PRO-M V2 motherboard and a Intel Duo Core 2 E6300 cpu and a MAXTOR SATA 200gb HD. First,( BIOS are AMERICAN MEGATRENDS) my computer is beeping TWICE at startup which I belives means-parity circuity failure(What doe`s that mean?) anyway after my computer sits all night and I start it up the temp reads 148 degrees farenheight and go`s upto 152f. This can NOT be right, I checked the cpu with a digital temp meter and it reads 98 to 102f. Now the computer has shutdown on me when running a high task program. Can the motherboard be bad? My case has 2 120 fans running at 2400rpm and the cpu fan is a GIGABYTE TORNATO, there is PLENTY of air moving.. ANYBODY have ANY ideas??? Thank You,,,Paul

Since it is your first build, make certain that the HSF is securely cllpped into place. Did you use a thermal paste between the HSF and the CPU? On the ram aspect, did you use matching sticks? Did you insert them in the correct slots (check the manual)? Check to see that they are properly seated and locked into place.

I've been sitting here wondering if the ram and CPU problems are related? I tend to not believe in coincidences, and since ram is critical and will even keep the machine from posting, it seems possible that it may be causing the processor to overwork, ergo the high temps.

I used a large amount of the ARTIC SILVER 5 compound for the heatsink and cpu, the tempature reading is from the BIO`s. (Is there another way I can check cpu tempature other than bios?) My memory is a 1gb module of DDR2 533 of G-Skill . Yes, the memory is in the right slot, my mobo has 2 slots for 184 pin ddr 400 and 2 slots for ddr 2 240 pin and I double checked. LOOK, when I first startup my computer after sitting ALL night and boot it into bios it is already ready a temp of 148f. There is NO way it can be that HOT in 10 seconds. What would give the wrong reading? A bad mobo? Also can you applie TO MUCH ARTIC SILVER 5 compound? Thank you,,,Paul

The only thing that I can give a clear answer to is that, yes you can use too much Artic Silver, but I don't know that that would be the cause of this problem. Actually, the less paste that you use the better, so long as there is a even layer across the entire chip. You should use a bead, something like a grain of rice, then spread it with a plastic bag, on your finger, making sure that all areas are covered.

The bios reading should be the most reliable, but there are some others programs which are fairly good. The one that I use is SpeedFan, but this is a Windows program, and I don't think that I would allow the OS to bootup long enough to be able to install it, without getting the temperature down first.

If nothing that has been discussed helps, I would assume that the motherboard is bad and return it.
