Is my HD dying?

Its a maxtor 540dx and its been making clicking noises lately and my mobo is having problems detecting it every now and then. Is it time for a new HD?

Sounds like it, but 540DX isn't too old you should have some warrantty left.

I'd try to RMA it and Maxtor will send you one of the newer and faster models like they did for me

I got a DiamondMax 9+ for my less than a year old 640DX

thats the sound of a dying hardrive i would rma it quick as you can. i had maxtor sent me a 120gb drive for my old 80gb drive i sent in for advance rma it took longer then what they said it would but the 120gb made up for it
