Is my hard drive broken or just dumb mistake?

Your hard drive is broken.

If you have any important data that's not backed up, now would be a good time to attach the drive to a working PC and copy the data. Once that's done, you can run the drive maker's disk diagnostics program to see what it says. But, basically, it's time to replace the hard drive.

Hard drives can fail at any time. Most failures will be very early (the first few days) or after several years, but they can fail at any time in between.

Which means, have multiple backups, if you care about your data.
Yes, it is a huge PITA, but it is better that the alternative of losing all your data.
