Is my e4400 running too hot?

The idle temp is in the low 40s at stock speed when in bios and when running the cpu tests on 3dmark06 it can get above 70 with a slight oc to 2.2.

The cpu is currently on stock cooling with an arctic freezer 7 pro in the mail.

The voltage setting in bios is on auto, could this have something to do with the temps?

Are these types of temperatures normal or are they too high? Also, what can I do to lower these temps?

Yes it high. Maybe reseat the CPU, reapply thermal paste? At a minor OC 70 is wayy to high. Something is wrong.

Stop letting the BIOS raise your vcore for you. Your processor will do at least 2.4-2.6 Ghz on stock voltage, maybe higher.

When I put the voltage to 1.325 I got a BSOD when running 3dmark06 at 2.2. What could be the problem?

Mine will run at 2.9 at stock voltage. I do get temps in the lower 60s at full load, but I can no case fans except for the PSU. I wasn't able to overclock my cpu at all until I lowered my memory speed.

The memory speed may be it, I have the multiplier set to auto. Here were the current specs that made it BSOD:

fsb: 220mhz
multi: 10
vcore: 1.325
pci: 100mhz
mem multi: auto

Setting the memory multiplier to 2 helped a ton, currently it is at 240mhz x 10 stable.

Also, what software gives accurate temperature readings? Speedfan is 15c less than CoreTemp and bios is about in the middle.

The C2D sensors gives a value that is the number of degrees away from the throttling point (Tjunction). Speedfan assumes Tjunction to be 85C, while CoreTemp uses the value stored on the CPU, which usually on the E4000 series is 100C. However, both cases may be inaccurate. Probably the best way to use the C2D's reading is to use CoreTemp 0.95 and change the option to report the Delta from Tjunction, which will give you how many degrees of headroom you have left before it begins to throttle.

I had the same discrepancy between CoreTemp and Speedfan.
Try Intel TAT (thermal analysis tool) http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/392/mirrors.php
This will prove that CoreTemp is more accurate, within +/- 2c.

Also try aiming for higher a FSB vs. higher multiplier for greater overall speed. FSB effects how fast the components talk to the CPU.

You have almost the exact same computer I do

Is there a setting in bios to make sure the fan goes a full blast all the time? I am idling at 50c according to TAT

Thanks for the tip! My idle is now around 37c when I check in the PC health status, but TAT is stil showing 50c+. What's the deal!

PC health in the BIOS will tell you the same value as Speedfan (+/-)
Do not rely on it.

Its very simple for C2D - CoreTemp or TAT

Well if tat is accurate, why am I idling at 50c? I set that option to make the sure fan is at full speed! Grrr
