Its very expensive for my dad to have me on his insurance. Its about $3000 extra a year to have me on his insurance.

I'm a 20 year old male.

What cars are you insured on? what coverage? How many tickets have you gotten?

I call shens. I'm at, have a reckless driving and 24 over on my record, and full coverage for me on my Saab is about 1200/yr, IF that

My dad drives 1200 a miles a week, so he drives burner cars. Some old Explorer. I have an 8 year old Nissan Maxima.

I started driving when I was 15 (special case license) and my insurance was about $4000 a year. It was crazy high. I got into a small wreck when I was 16, but the insurance didn't change. Its actually been going down a bit.

My girlfriend who I dated in high school had a perfect driving record, had a car worth about $5000 and was paying $2500 a year. So, my $3000 extra now doesn't seem so bad.

Your dad must drive a very expensive car or you have a lot of points. Right now the insurance on my 21 year old is about $500/yr. for PLPD. on a $2000 car. I imagine the OP's insurance will be around $500-$1000.

At $1200/yr. you are talking ~$25/wk. OP, I would think you could make that delivering newspapers.

First OP if your Dad is that bad grow up and get out. When I was 16, I had a disagreement with my parents so I moved out. At 16 I had my own apartment, my own car, worked full time, and took a full load at college(early entrance in Ohio, you finish your last two years of high school taking college classes instead of going to high school). If you don't like it grow up and move out. Otherwise deal with it.

Anyways, a quick trip to google and it looks like you don't need a "drivers" license to ride a moped in Texas. You just need to go to the DMV and take a written test. Then tag it and get your own liability insurance. These weren't DMV sites so take it with a grain of salt. You don't need on his, get your own.

Also to the people telling me to pay my own way, I guess me paying for groceries, the cable bill, insurance, as well as helping my dad at his business for free while maintaining my grades and working 20 hours a week isnt considered paying my own way. :)
You're paying the insurance and he doesn't want you to get a license because you'll have to pay more or what?

Having fun yanking our chains?

I'm calling shens on this. A 16 year old can't even rent an apartment.

Yes, your dad is very unreasonable. Not getting you a car would be reasonable, but not letting you get your license at 18 is very unreasonable. Grow some balls and get it anyway

Just have your stuff packed and ready to move when you do...

As has been mentioned, bring with you the forms that exclude you from his insurance...have them filled out, have HIM sign them and turn them into his insurance company.
Then, you're on your own for a car and insurance.

He's gonna have to realize sometime that his son is growing up, and he needs to be less of a tightwad

I agree with this.

C'mon, you guys, telling him to move out or to pay for it all on his own. .... don't all guys rush out to get their driving license asap? Likely all of his friends have their license already. Most parents bite the bullet and pay the auto insurance for their kid at first.

His father sounds like a control freak.

Or money is tight right now and he can't afford to pay more. Just because you're a parent doesn't mean that you suddenly have the money to pay for a kid.

I agree with everyone else. If you need a license that bad, get it yourself. Pay for any increase in his insurance and any other necessary fees.

or maybe they are ona very tight budget. maybe the kid is a very bad driver and the father does nto want his insurance to go up. maybe the kid keeps getting in trouble and this is a way of punishment?

odds are we are nto getting the full story.

but it really does not matter. if he wants it he can go get insurance on himself and go get it. he does nto need his fathers ok on it.

Actually do you need to have the car insured by you to take the test? You could always just go for the test so you have your license, you just can't use the car after that. But at least you'd have your license now.

I would just offer to pay the difference though but like you said you're already paying for lot of other stuff you don't really have to be paying for so maybe negotiate that with him. It's cheaper that way. When I got an estimate to get insurance on my 98 buick it was 5 grand. How much did I pay for the car? 5 grand (that's after taxes and stuff). That said, when I bought the car it was put in my dad's name and on my parent's insurance and I just pay them the difference which is about 1k per year. So every year I just write them a check. In fact when I move out I might just stick with that, until I'm 25 then the insurance wont be as high if I go alone.

I like the idea of you waiting until 18 to get your license ;)

My thoughts as a father having gone through this a couple times.

* My cheap ass insurance Co that geiko or whatever found for me (AIG) wanted a fortune to insure my kids. My local State Farm guy was extremely reasonable to cover my kids and has a few programs like steer clear and good students discounts that made it even more reasonable, so I switched.

* You need to get driving experience because an accident and/or serious injury to you or others is far worse then slightly higher premiums.

* The longer you wait, in my experience, the more likely you are to blow off getting a license and doing stupid crap like driving anyway and then getting busted for it.

*Unless you are driving innercity or just down the block, get something safer than a moped for a starter car..yikes!

*You only need a moped license in Oregon rather than a drivers license if it is meets certain requirements. YMMV in your state.

*I made my kids pay the increase in the Insurance policy.

You can call shens all you want but its true. I never said it was a pent house in Manhattan. It was a crap hole in small town Ohio, but it was mine. No complex managers or other crap, just a couple apartments an old man and his wife owned. Me and my girlfriend of the time split the rent(she was over 18 and the source of the issue). I had a full time job and paid my own bills, no nothing fancy but it got the job done. Some people have the ability to make their own way and not get on a forum and bitch about how mean their parents are.

Why not offer to pay the difference in insurance premium, or better yet, work and buy your own insurance?
