Is my dad being unreasonable?

Well I am 18 years old now and I still dont have my license. I have a moped I bought in the fall and have been working on it. I just got the plates for it as well.

Then I ask my father if I can go get my license and he told me no because it will raise his insurance premium as having another adult in the household does that.

Now I dont have anyone else with a car that can take me to get my license. My dad knows that too. Now am I being unreasonable or should I be allowed to get my license?

LOL, you're 18, go get your license yourself. Walk or drive your moped.

Well in order to drive the moped legaly, I need a license and insurance. I would walk except the DMV is 12 miles away and they dont lend out vehicles there.

It would only raise his rates if you got added onto his insurance for his vehicles. That doesn't necessarily have to be done if you only intend on driving the moped.

Get your own insurance, if your state even requires it for a moped.

edit: just drive to the license place. It is 12 miles don't be a pussy

You're 18, he can't decide if you get your license - his only decision is whether or not you're on the same insurance.

Do what you feel you need to, just keep the possible insurance charges in mind.

I dont think I can take the driving test with a moped? I mean I have driven the moped on old back roads so that isnt whats stopping me there.

If you REALLY want to get your license, have a friend take you to the DMV in his car and use his car to take the test.

Your dad is right. At least in MOST states, just having you as a licensed driver in the house will raise his premiums.
(it's presumed that unless you are specifically excluded, you will be permitted to drive the family car)

Of course, since you think he's being so unreasonable...and you're 18...move out, get an apartment and your own insurance.

And whether or not the OP is welcome to live in his house. 😉

Jesus kid, I had my own license, car and insurance when I was 16. Get off the damn PC, get on the bus and go down to the DMV. I paid my way, it sounds like your father wants you to do the same, but you aren't "getting" it.

Well, it depends where you live. I have a few friends in their early twenties that never got their license because they went to boarding school or lived in New York, where public transportation suffices. If you can pay for it, though, I don't think it should be a problem.

+1

I got the forms that specifically excluded me from driving the car for his insurance filled them out and got him to sign them when he gave me that excuse.

Also it is 12 miles? Walk.. jesus 😛 I walk 6 miles a day between classes no sweat, it'll do the body good 😛

Like someone else said, offer to pay your dad the difference in the price. It'll show him you're serious about wantingn your licence and man enough to take on the burden of the insurance premium hike.

Well if I do that then I will need to adjust my budget a bit. Although that does seem like a reasonable solution.

Also to the people telling me to pay my own way, I guess me paying for groceries, the cable bill, insurance, as well as helping my dad at his business for free while maintaining my grades and working 20 hours a week isnt considered paying my own way. 🙂

You pay the insurance, but your Dad won't drive you to the DMV because the insurance rate will go up? Shens.

Yes, your dad is very unreasonable. Not getting you a car would be reasonable, but not letting you get your license at 18 is very unreasonable. Grow some balls and get it anyway

Just have your stuff packed and ready to move when you do...

As has been mentioned, bring with you the forms that exclude you from his insurance...have them filled out, have HIM sign them and turn them into his insurance company.
Then, you're on your own for a car and insurance.

He's gonna have to realize sometime that his son is growing up, and he needs to be less of a tightwad
