Ok, here's the deal, just put together my first system ( with parts from newegg 🙂 ) and had a little trouble setting it up. Here's what I have
ECS K7S5A
Athlon XP 1800+ w/ retail hsf
4 thermaltake 80mm case fans
512 mb pc133 generic
visiontek geforce 3 ti200
sb live value
cheiftec DX-01WD case (similar to antec 1040) with an enhance 300W ps (amd approved upto 2100+)
refurbished gateway ev910 19" monitor (purchased earlier)
40 gig WD 7200 (purchased earlier)
80 gig Maxtor 7200
so here's what happened, I installed the processor first and thought I did it right although that hsf was a biotch to get on. I installed the mb in case and everything else after that. I turned on the monitor, crossed my fingers and pushed the power button. Nothing. No post. All the fans are going fine, the power led is on (no hdd led though). Ok, long story short I try everything I know (I read up in teh forums here ahead of time to anticipate any problems and thanks by the way for the free advise all) and as a last resort had only vid card and one stick of ram in sitting on a foam pad that came with the mb outside the case. Nothing.
Ok, at this point I figured I crushed my processor and had nothing to lose, so I took off the heatsink and removed the processor. I reseated the processor and reapplied the hsf with the same thermal paste crap that came with it (in the process destroying thermal seal???) and tried to boot again.
Success! I got a post (although it posted at 1150 due to fsb at 100, which I knew about thanks again to the forums).
The first thing I did was check the thermal monitor and watched as it slowly rose and then stabilized at around 37. (good enough for me)
Ok, I was satisfied with that for my retail hsf so I setup everything else and got my system working with all the bells and whistles.
Everything was working fine, so I taxed my system with seti while downloading off kazaa and playing counterstrike. Well, after about an hour I restarted and checked my temp as fast as I could and it was 42.
So, I thought everything was fine, so I went back to my normal use. I've been running my system pretty much 24 hours a day for about 3 days now. One morning I woke up and turned on my monitor and it was a black screen. It was on, working fine, and getting some type of signal, but it was totally black (well, not black, a kind of grey black but no writing at all). The power led was on, but no hdd led. I thought this was probably some energy saving thing like the hdds shutting down and that messed someting up so I restarted with the reset button (soft reboot didn't work) and changed all the power settings to always on.
Ok, thought my problems were solved, but today I woke up to turn on my monitor, and black screen again. I reset again and checked cpu temp in bios and found it was 47 but quickly dropped down. I have no idea what the temp was right away, maybe 50 or so?
So, could a cpu overheat caused this black screen to come up, what else could have caused this?
Sorry I went on so long with this, and hope at least 1 person bothers to read all this and give me some advise. Thanks.
One more thing, I'm not overclocking this at all or my vid card, everything is running default.
