Is my computer about to die?

I posted a thread in the Software for Windows section because initially I had a problem with accessing my desktop(Windows Vista Premium 32-bit).A Windows Explorer error message came up with a black screen and just the mouse pointer (no Start menu, no desktop icons, no taskbar, no sounds, etc).

BUT then when I wanted to wipe the hard drive disk clean and install Windows Vista with the installation DVD I was met with the same black screen right after the BIOS boot up with no mouse pointer. So at this point I can't even wipe the HDD clean and install the OS again.

My computer is 5 years old (in my sig) and has ALOT of dust build up and it's been pretty hot lately where I live.

Have you tried a hard disk diagnostics scanning tool? Most of the disk makers have boot disk images you burn to CD and boot your PC to. Maxtor disks from that time frame are VERY prone to failure.

No I haven't.It's been a while and I don't know where I've put all the original documentation and software that came with my custom built.I've been out of the loop for awhile now.

Should I just replace the HDD? I feel like it might be time to get a new computer.

Sounds like a HDD issue...try to download ubuntu and run diagnostics on your HDD( I can't remember the name of the app anymore).

If you can get another PC, simply download the ISO from their site, burn it and boot from live disk. From there, you'll at least be able to tell if it's your HDD or another component. Linux is your best friend when it comes to troubleshooting a windows PC.

run memtest /check temps
look at the capacitors near cpu area /pci e /northbride maybe there is one damaged capacitor
