Is My CD Burner Broken?

I have an Philips 2/2/6 IDE CD-RW drive. Using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.1, it started to not burn CDs correctly. I then upgrades to Easy CD Creator 4.0, and it still does not burn a CD correctly (audio or data). It says that "errors were reported by the output device." I am using Win98, and I made a new TEMP folder, but that made no difference. Anyone have any suggestions? I would be kinda glad if the burner is broken; would give me an excuse to get at least a 12/10/32A Plextor!

If you are so inclined, try opening the drive up and cleaning it. Blow the dust out with canned air and remember to NEVER touch the lens(even though it is very tempting);) Try and lube the two rails with Vasoline that the laser eye travels on as well as the grooves in the burner tray from underneath. I have seen many burners get a piece of dirt or dust stuck in the lube that was placed in there from the factory and report similar errors to what you are saying. Try that and I hope it works for you as well as it did me. ;) I hope this helps.

Good advice from bp6. You could have some problem on the slide rails, expecially since your burner has a few good years on it.

Also make sure that your HD is not defraged. Run a defrag on it before makes any cd's.

Thanks for the advice. I've been having problems with ever since I used one of those compressed air bottles to dust the drive. I was trying to burn from my D: drive, which was recently defraged. Actually, both drives were just defraged. Instead of taking it apart, I'll probably just use it as an excuse to upgrade. 2x Write is sooo slow!
