For a good CRT, buy refurbished. They're phasing out CRTs, so new ones are lower quality. You can find a Dell P1110 dirt-cheap, it's a lovely perfect-flat 21" monitor and will display up to 2048x1536. Just make sure you see the one you'll actually take home so you can make sure it has no screen burn or anything.

what about refresh rates i see a monitor with

Maximum Resolution 1600x1200 @ 76Hz
Recommended Resolution 1280x1024 @ 85Hz
