Is my 920 running to hot?

Even under stock speeds the temps on the cores reach around 72 after 5 mins under full load. With it oc'ed to 3.8ghz the temps reach around 80-82 after 5mins in prime95. Its being cooled by a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus with two 120mm evercool fans at 2k rpm and i swapped out the case fans with higher rpm, high cfm out output so the temps would be lower. I read on here about people having temps lower than 70 under full load and I dont know how they do it. I used artic silver 5 thermal paste. Are these temps to high?

try reseating the heatsink and see if it helps, because maybe it isn't having enough contact

I have reset it three times now. Made sure that the thermal paste is evenly spread too.

Something's off. How many volts are you pumping through that thing, 10?

I have a Core i5/750 3.8 GHz with that cooler (single stock fan) and it hits 71 runing LinX. Prime 95 pegs it at 60.

Assuming your thermal reading are somewhat correct, something's wrong with the cooler or the mounting.

The fans are pointed in the right the direction. I've checked them...twice I got one question about the about the cooler itself. Theres a small round what seems to be thumb screw in the middle of the heatsink near the bottom. It has a spring on it but when i try to tighten it, it doesn't do anything. What is your ambient temperature?

Those temperatures are not totally ridiculous - especially for a 4 heat pipe cooler on a 130watt TDP chip.

Some of these people are not saying they have HT turned off - makes a big difference! Others have the better six pipe heatsinks. You are not that much over temp but should be able to do better.

Does the temp go down with the side of the case off?

This. You should be able to do 3.8 at much less than 1.25. I think mine was 1.18 (maybe less).

I need 1.3 for just 3.7, but thats with HT on. However with a megahalem, I never hit 60 under full load.

those temps are not right for hyper 212+, it can do better than that. see if you can reseat it first. it should be able to do 3,6 with 75ish temperatures with a single stock fan. this almost certainly a contact problem.

It drops by 10-12 degrees with side panel off.

I can only get a stable(not even full sure about this) 3.8 with 1.35 volts, nothing less. The problem with that is that at 1.35 volts the temps go up past 90.

Set everything back to spec, test it and get back to us.

if your stock temps are that high your heatsink isn't making proper contact or the fan isn't spinning but you said your fans were fine.

You really need to take the HS off clean any thermal compound you have off of it and the CPU, reapply and reattach the HS making sure its on properly.

Just got done doing just this. Removed the heatsink, removed all thermal paste from both cpu and hs. Reapplied artic silver thermal paste, spreading it evenly across cpu with old credit card. Put the hs fan on this time facing horizontal position, checked to make sure fans were spinning and pushing air in the right direction. Loaded it up just to find out the temps are the exact same as before Upon inspection everything on the cpu and hs seemed fine. Im very frustrated with this. This is the fifth or sixth time ive removed the motherboard from cpu and pulled off hs. Heres a pic of the results http://imagebin.org/88779

Also that pic is being very generous because now the temps at idle are slightly above 40. Ambient in the room is 70 degress farenheit.

The stock hs but that shows even higher temps.

I have the same cooler and processor. Mine is at stock speed with vcore of 1.10v. It goes to mid 50's under load in prime 95. I think your vcore is causing the problem. This cooler isn't really made for high overclockers. Its good for stock users and mild overclockers though. You get what you pay for with this cooler.

I dont think 3.6 on a 920 is that hard core for overclocking considering people are getting these over 4ghz.
