Is MS Vista such a huge turn off that people (me) should consider Apples?

Subject says it all.

I'm very negative on Vista and all of the DRM stuff they've put in it that I'm seriously considering an Apple for my next laptop purchase. I'm also considering Linux, but I need some mainstream apps that aren't on Linux yet but are on both Apple and MS.

Yes...I know Apples are overpriced. My point is that Vista is such a letdown and I'm curious as to if other people are as disenchanted as me and are looking at alternatives.

My choices:

1. Look at Apple and OSX
2. Run XP until its legs give out
3. Look at Linux and run WINE or whatever the latest Windows emulator is

Anything else I'm missing? I should say that my game playing on PC's is dramatically decreasing. Playing much more console games and I foresee this trend continuing.
 
Apple has DRM also, don't let them fool you. My advice, separate yourself from computers. They are the devil. Apple doubly so.
 
You think Vista has too much DRM, so you are choosing Apple? That is really funny.

If you are so "anti-DRM" linux would be the only choice. Apple as a company is just as involved with providing feasible DRM solutions for various media as any other company.
 
Apple's are cool for an hour. After that, it's Windows all the way. I grew up with Apples and had an OSX machine for a little while...it's just doesn't have the sticking power of Windows.

As far as gaming, when Unreal 2008 or Duke Nukem Forever (lol) comes out, you'll regret having an Apple. 🙂
 
Depends on which Apple you get to if its over priced or not. iMacs and Macbooks aren't over priced I dont' believe, but it seems like the Macbook Pro ($1000 over the regular Macbook, WTF were they thinking) and Mac Mini (you get nothing but the Computer unit for $600) is.

Also I have DRM issues with Windows XP all the time.

Whats wrong with vista? aside from 64 bit stuff not working (thanks to hardware manufacturer's not writing drivers) the 32bit version works just fine...
 
The main reason I don't like vista is that it's just more eye candy that I don't need. I still switch XP back to windows classic theme.
Vista is 10x worse. All that stupid crap doesn't do anything for me except waste my time.
 
Let me rephrase then....turned off for a multitude of reasons:

1. DRM (agreed that Apple also has DRM)
2. Cost (full blown MS Vista is ~$400)
3. Security (granted, this is because the user base is much larger than any other OS, but that still means it's got the biggest target on its back)

I should say that I'm not a "hater". I've been 100% MS since DOS 3.0 and liked every minute of it. I'm just saying there are alternatives (and good alternatives to boot) and with this launch of Vista, doesn't it behoove a savy computer user to look at ones options (much like reviewing car insurance and 401k every year).

apples suck dude, don't get one. i'm on one right now typing this message. i've been developing on one for over 2 years now and i still hate macs. i would take a windows PC over this crap anydays. on top of that, they are overpriced for what you get. i have a top of the line mac and i have no clue what the price of this thing runs, but i wouldn't pay even $500 for this PC for my own personal use.

OSX flat out sucks. sure it may look pretty, but it's usability is just whack.

I'm sure you're eligible for an upgrade...and do you really need Ultimate anyways (even if you do, upgrade is $260)? Besides, buy a new machine with XP now and you'll get Vista for the cost of shipping.

I wouldn't say that Vista's general security is proven one way or another at this time, but I can understand some trepidation.
 
So why can't you just keep using XP?


Ignore half of what apple tells you, and believe half of the remainder.

I feel the need as a cross-platform user so that the learning curve on apple machines is actually pretty high, mostly because the WORLD knows the PC. If you've never used an apple machine, it's a pretty big risk to take to buy one blindly.

Apple systems leave little for the user to try out and experiment with. I think they have it right by trying to simplify the options for novice users, but the trend I'm seeing is that it's not the novice users that are buying apples. I personally find it fun to tweak my system and see what I can make it do... regardless of the performance gain it gives my games. Apple's options are to do it their way, or... do it their way.

Vista is not a letdown at all I love it and have already paid for my copy of ultimate.
 
Do you even need the full blown functions of vista? I doubt apple's OS offers all those functions, so obviously if you need the vista premium apple's OS isnt an alternative...

I have vista running and I dont notice any difference in terms of DRM than XP had. I do like vista's new syncing features (folders between computers, devices, etc).

It sounds like you are just getting bored with MS, and you want to tackle something new.
 
I'm very unhappy with protected video path implemented at the hardware level with no workaround (as it's also tied to TPM at the chip level). I understand it's probably a small issue, but I'm starting to feel with all of the "rights" we're given, computing and what WE want to do data is slowly being eroded. This ties in with the tight integration between Vista and the hardware level (TPM again). I grant that my issues with this are in direct opposite view of my security concerns because TPM can ensure a more secure environment but with TPM and its output protection management system, there is the POTENTIAL of serious lockdowns if Hollywood/content creators strongly push for it.

As far as price goes...granted, you may not need the full edition, but don't you feel like you're being nickel and dimed on getting "features"? That bothers me. They're segmentizing the market even more to maximize profits. Do I understand why they're doing it? Sure. Am I happy with it? Not really.

No need to discuss security. It's a concern of mine that hasn't been proven out yet, but like I said, with the largest user base, it's gonna have the largest target.

Maybe I am getting bored with Windows and that's why I'm looking for a change. Part of my point is that I'm not "excited" about Vista like I was with XP. I'm happy to run XP until it dies but I'd sure like to see an alternative OS that gives me that warm tingly feeling down there. 🙂

I'm assuming you're referring to HDCP? This has been discussed many times on this forum, but I'll summarize:

1. HDCP has been pushed by the content creators as part of the new HD-DVD and BluRay standards. In order for Microsoft (or Apple, or any other OS manufacturer) to license HD-DVD or BluRay support, they need to support HDCP. You can argue that Microsoft should have fought the standard, but really it's not their call (and if Apple supports it and Microsoft resists, that's potential lost revenue).

2. HDCP flags that limit resolution in the absence of HDCP support are currently disabled on all HD-DVD content. Studios have stated that they do not plan on enabling these flags for several years, and they may not be enabled at all.
