Is Mitsubishi The Red-Headed Stepchild Of Japanese Vehicles?

The Mitsubishi plant is about 20 miles from where I live. I wouldn't hire most of the people that work there to pull weeds from my beans let alone let them build something that my wife and children ride in at high speed.

BUUAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA. AHAHHHHHHHHAAHAHHAA. **HIGH FIVE** 😛

😀

Other than catchy commercials, and lucrative financing options, they really offer nothing over Toyota/Honda/Nissan.

Heck, my new Nissan I just bought is almost more Mexican than Japanese. 55% parts from Japan, 45% from Mexico, assembled in South America.

Id rather buy another Saturn than a Mitsubishi, i rode with one of my friends as he test drove a Galant, it looked cheap, and felt cheap, and seemed rather poorly made.

I have a friend who works at mitsubishi in Japan and every time I talk to him, he has another story or gripe about the general bungling corporate culture at mitsubishi. He describes his work place as a real life dilbert, how innovation by it's worker is stifled by management, the dodging of responsibility, how everyone only does the bare minimum of work asked of them, etc.

Isn't this the culture in a lot of corporations nowadays? Employees are basically sick of the insecurity that their employers create in the work environment. All of the staff cutting, re-hiring, cutting, poor decisions, lack of respect and lack of trust has not done much to build employee morale.

It might be, I haven't worked at any large corporations yet to make a call like that. But my friend thinks mitsubishi has it particularly bad next to their competitors. He works in mitsu's electronics division and notes that in Japan nearly all of Mitsubishi's products are outclassed in terms of innovation and features by their competitors like Sony. Basically, he thinks mitsu just puts out a lot of 'me too' products and if their automotive line up is any indication, it seems to be true.

I will say this for Mitsubishi. My dad had a '88 Mitsubishi Mighty Max pickup and that thing WOULD NOT die. All it needed was regular maintenance.

My dad was on the way to work one morning and dosed off briefly at the wheel and ended up in a ditch. Barely did any damage to the side of the vehicle. Couple years later, the thing rolled down our driveway (our driveway slopes downward to the back yard; ~20 degree slope all the way). It rolled about 80 yards and ran into our back fence. No damage:Q

Too bad all their current offerings suck.

Dead Eclipse

I was looking into buying a Mitsu a while back and while researching them came across this site. I realize every make has its problems but it was surprising to see so many reports of issues listed here and the apparent lack of response from the dealer/manufacturer. This site alone was enough to keep me from their cars.

That's because even though Mitsubishi engineers sometimes do some great things... they also are backed by the greediest, most evil, despicable, money-hungry, incompetent, dumb-ass, two-faced corporations on the planet.

There's a reason why the 4G63T is one of the best engines available in ANY car... but there's also a reason why DSMers call Mitsubishi dealerships "Satan".... but then again, most dealerships aren't exactly what you call trustworthy either. They just don't always try to actively rape you. While a lot of people that drive DSMs and their brethern LOVE their cars to death... they kinda hate how Mitsubishi treats it's customers.

Yeah! Someone else who knows how bad of a company Mitsubishi really is. As strong as that above statement is, it is also 100% true. Mitsubishi has been repeatedly ranked as the worst corporation in the world to the environment. They have bribed many governments to allow them to pull off some of the crap they have done.

On top of it they cut corners with their products, so their products end up being unrealiable crap.

Hmm....well I own a 93 3000GT. I've had it for about two years now. It really hasnt been that bad of a car. I like the way it looks and "feels", it is a very tight little car. It is the slowest of the bunch, compared to the RX-7, 300ZX and the Supra but who cares, I look good driving it. Parts are a bit spendy for it, but I think you get that with all sports cars...heck, even parts for my 82 Supra are spendy, but because it says Supra....well you know. I know for sure that I wouldnt own any other Mitsubishi product, thats cause I feel like they spent a bit more money building the 3000gt's. I know Ill get crap for this but I test drove a 2002 WRX and that felt REALLY cheap compared to my car, didnt like it at all. Well, everybody take it easy....Chris🙂

Reliability aside, the 3000GT has FAR better styling than most of the cookie cutter clones from Honda, Toyota or Nissan. I can tell a WRX from the rest, but just for my future reference, which do you think has better styling, the WRX or 3000GT? To me, it should be no contest in ANYBODY'S book!

Give me a break. The 3000GT looks fat and bloated. The only two Japanese sports cars of the 90's that were cleanly styled and are STILL classic designs are the '90 Nissan 300ZX and the '93-'95 Mazda RX7.

Of those two, the RX7 is the CLASSIC beauty and the design is TIMELESS unlike the trendy 3000GT.

LOL.....fat and bloated?? I dunno what car you are looking at, but my car isnt fat or bloated. The 300ZX would have been another of my choices, but the mazda is to plain looking🙂 My 3000GT Pic2

Only with the garbage 4-spd autos that they slapped onto the Mitsu-built V6's (the early Mistu 3.0's that Chrysler used were plagued with internal seal issues and frequently burn oil). And yes, the Stealth is the same as the 3000GT, neither one is "rebadged", rather they were both built off of the same assembly line, and then became two seperate cars from that point. It was a joint venture between Chrysler/Mitsubishi

Hmmmm, why was the direct comparison between the WRX and 3000GT avoided? Your idea of "clean" is what I call bland. I honestly can't tell one from another! Now, back to the question, WRX or 3000GT?

Edit: BTW, the RX7 does look better than Honda, Toyota or Nissan's offerings. Not quite as bland...

As much as I despise the looks of the WRX, I prefer it to the 3000GT...even though the two are not direct competitors. The 3000GT is just overstyled to the max. Mitsubishi is TRULY the Japanese Pontiac.

Perhaps I'm off base, but why compare a sports GT from the mid 90's to a current sports sedan? What are you comparing? Looks, performance, utility?

I'm sorry but your argument is all over the place. The RX-7 looks better than what? The aformentioned companies' offerings are the 300ZX and Supra. You say those look bland? I can think of quite a few Japanese sports cars from the 90's to today that are anything but bland - perhaps not gorgeous, but not bland either.

I just picked the WRX because it stands out. The rest are so similar it's ridiculous. Are they all afraid to make something too different? That's where Chrysler shows it's balls. Interesting how many of their unique designs took off. Not the least of which was their friggen minivan! :frown:

You're right about one thing, my idea of TRULY timeless design spans three decades. From the sixties through the nineties. If I can't find a good used G. Marquis, Town Car or Roadmaster, I'd gladly opt for one of of these.

Edit: For KnightBreed, the question was, "...which do you think has better styling, the WRX or 3000GT?"

The WRX is one of the ugliest and cheap looking cars that I have ever seen! I don't care what is under the hood, it still looks like a dog. If you take off the spoiler and change the hood it looks exactly like a cheap Ford Escort. The hood makes it look even MORE UGLY than an Escort! You guys that love that car because it is cheap and "fast" are ridiculous. If I hear one more thing about the WRX on these forums I'm gonna puke!!!

If I had 26k to spend on a car right now, I would get a WRX 😀

This whole "WRX vs. 3000GT" conversation seems really silly to me. The two are totally dissimilar cars, with different target markets and completely different functions. You might as well ask "Which has the better styling, a Mazda Miata or a Ford F-350?"

As far as I am concerned, the 3000GT was a rather overweight, feature-bloated, generic Japanese GT car. I agree 100% with NFS4 that the '90s 300ZX and last-gen RX7s were standouts, as was the most recent Supra - to me the 3000GT is cut from the same cloth as the models that preceded those three cars - pretty much totally lacking in style, but solid in performance.
