If you don't have a tv capture card MCE provides a nice GUI for watching videos and such. If you have a video card then it can do tv watching and such.

If you have 'media extenders' then you can watch videos and tv from your computer on your tv and such. It'll do Tivo-like DVR capabilities.

Then it has added stuff for supporting and managing these sort of things.

Think of it like 'Windows XP Media' edition.

Hence the name, Media Center...edition. :)

I've got four tuners (3 analog, 1 digital) crammed into my MCE2005 box, and, obviously, a standard install of XP Pro wouldn't help me a bit in managing them.

MCE is a very, very good system if you're interested in TiVo style TV capture. Add a few tuners (people are cramming in many, many tuners) and go to town.

Do you happen to know if MCE supports Novell Netware without having to install the Novell Client? I know that Pro supports it natively and Home needs the Client software installed.

Thanks,
Randy

My main computer system runs Media Center and has an ATI Theatre 550 Pro tuner in it. I use it as my PVR, and record 5-6 shows per day. I dont need to join a domain, but I do need remote desktop, so it works well for me.
