Is McCain Anything But Another War President?

McCain's entire life, before and after his political career started, has been defined by the military. His campaign has been defined by the military. His policies are defined by the military.

We've got powder-kegs all around the world ready to ignite. Israel/Iran. Afghanistan/Pakistan. Georgia/Russia. McCain, if elected, will pull a GWB and march this country optimistically into another war on the eve of his re-election bid, using war as a first option instead of the last.

I believe that someone like McCain, who actually knows what war is, will be less likely to happily march our asses into other countries.

You think the guy who suffered in a POW camp for that long is going to rush to put young men in the same place he was?

How does McCain "know what war is"? I mean he never commanded a unit, never has sent troops into battle and was never on the ground fighting, all he knows is navy bases, the inside of a cockpit and an internment camp. He only went on 23 missions during vietnam before being captured so relatively short time span of experience. Theres just nothing there that shows he knows how to command troops let alone deal with generals.

So you have to command troops in order to understand the worst that war has to offer? See Nebor's post above.

McCain commanded a training squadron after his return from Vietnam. He turned it around and it won a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

This is of course ignoring the leadership he displayed during his captivity.

HAHAHA, this is one of the greatest myths in history. Those who've seen war don't want to repeat it, hey? More like those who are alcoholics have a penchant for the drink.

Lawls; Iraq.

Really.

Not really.

His statement about using similar strategies used in Iraq to solve crime problems here in the USA is proof.

McCain probably sprinkles gun powder on his eggs.

He still cannot admit the war in Iraq was a mistake. And I don't mean strategies, I mean the decision to go in there.

McCain probably wears camouflage underwear.

the devil you know vs the devil who's going to do whatever public opinion polls tell him to?

flip a coin, I'm leaning more and more towards voting 3rd party.

3rd party being the devil thats whackytobacky.

In some fairness, its still somewhat of an unknowable question if we put McCain in the oval office and it also will depend on the set of advisers he chooses? And that fact is that McCain has never held a position of top leadership in his entire life, and the transition from a maverick to a leader able to get results always proves difficult.

But for a McCain who has not yet admitted the Vietnam war was a mistake, my guess is that McCain is all too likely to use the war option. And in terms of using the diplomacy option, McCain shows a shocking lack of knowledge of what motivates and drives the other side, a necessary empathy and diplomacy precursor seeming lacking in McCain.

The additional problem for a hypothetical President McCain could be GWB, who may not be able to resist second guessing every move he makes. And of course the other joker is the make up of the new congress elected after 2008, even if a hypothetical President McCain wants changes, enough Republican Senators may remain to make that impossible, of course the same problem would face an Obama, but at leasts the dems would remain united.

I understand your logic, but have you actually listened to McCain talk or read his policies? Can you honestly say with a straight face that McCain is NOT the most pro-war candidate running? I mean, I'm not attacking the man or his views on war, but you're extremely delusional if you think McCain is less pro war than any other major candidate.

I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue.
