Is Maker's Mark Bourbon too Good to Mix with Coke?

Any good bourbon should be served straight up or on the rocks and Maker's Mark certainly qualifies. If you're going to mix with coke buy some cheap stuff. You're not going to be able to tell the difference anyway and there's nothing worse than a poseur that thinks it's cool to mix top shelf liquor in sissy drinks.

You probably think all vodka/Gin tonics taste the same too

No offense, but each bourbon has their own signature flavor. To each their own...

Yes each bourbon is unique, but not when they're buried under coke. And vodka tonics are beneath contempt. They're booze for people who don't like the taste of booze and are afraid to admit it.

If you mix them in coke? I imagine they do, unless they are fruit flavored.

Not really. It mixes with coke quite well. It is not a high quality bourbon.

Those that can't taste the difference in a cocktail need their taste buds checked. i.e. if you can't tell the difference between a high quality mixer and a well then you sure as heck aren't qualified to comment on a spirit straight.

IMO any mixed drink with coke you should use lowest tolerable alcohol. I think MM is high enough quality to be drunken alone, unmixed. I mean it's no Macallan or JW Blue, but I regard it as a "value" whiskey to be drunken unmixed.

I have absolutely no problem admitting that even though I drink, I can't stand the taste of alcohol...and I see nothing wrong with that. I'll mix just about anything, although I usually prefer just to take a shot and then chase. On the rocks isn't horrible, depending on the liquor, but again, when I don't enjoy the taste, I see no point in sipping.

I think the only thing I've ever been able to actually semi-enjoy straight-up was Hennessey XO.

Edit: Also, in my experiences, even if you can't taste the difference between a vodka tonic with, say, Grey Goose as opposed to Mr. Boston's, you'll sure as hell feel it the next morning.

Drink what you want how you want. Although I think ice in straight liquor is a mistake...

Anyone here tried I.W. Harper? They don't sell it around here...

It's actually a bit better with Diet Coke than regular... and I normally hate diet sodas.

You bought the bottle. Drink it however the Fsck you want.

Thank goodness it isn't since Macallan and JW Blue are Scotch whiskies (ick!), not bourbons. 🙂

For home sippin' I prefer the taste of George A. Dickel Tennessee Whisky over Makers Mark bourbon whiskey. I'm not sure I've ever had a bourbon that cost more than $50 a bottle, so I don't know if they taste any better.

I guess it depends on how strong you make the + coke drinks. I make them 2 parts coke, 1 part whisky/bourbon, and I don't feel the characteristic of the bourbon/whisky is masked to such an extent that the flavor is overrun by that of coke. With that said, I enjoy crown and coke much more than jack and coke, with maker's and coke falling in the middle. This favoring of one drink over the other is definitely not due to some Placebo effect as I could definately pass (100%) a blind ABX test.

I dont deny the fact that vodka+tonic drinkers dont appreciate the taste of liquor, but that doesnt deconstruct my view that vodka differences are still detectable in tonic. Of course, Gin, i'd much rather have it in a martini glass, but even it being dowsed in tonic water, you can taste the different gins.

In the end of course, just drink what you want! Its your money, and booze ain't cheap any way you look at it. If you can taste a difference, I'd say its worth a try.

i agree. i usually mix at around 50/50 when i drink bourbon/whisky and coke. sometimes a touch more coke - and i can taste flavor differences depending upon the type of bourbon/whisky used.

You guys have got it all wrong.

The best way to drink a whiskey is straight from the bottle

Oh, and it helps to have a couple brewskies before hand as well.

I was lucky that over the Christmas break I got to goto maker's mark distillery and four roses as well. Really a cool trip, I also got to hand dip my own makers mark bottle.

You get to put your initials in the wax?

Unfortunately no, that would have been awesome. They just have this vat of was and you get to dip the bottle yourself.

When I learned how to drink bourbon, I started out with the Canadian Whiskeys....they are smoother. To kill the sharp alcohol when I was driving, I would have Crown Royal mixed with Ginger Ale.... This is light and gets you into the flavor.

When I switched to Maker's Mark, I had the bartender mix it with Coke. It was great. I have since switched to Maker's on the rocks, because of the value and the overall flavor, but if you are just getting used to it....take it slow. Mix it with Coke....it's great either way.

A comparable bourbon is Woodford Reserve, but I warn you that it throws much higher alcohol than Maker's. I have been drinking scotch for the last few years and still prefer Maker's to Woodford. It's just from the same geographical area and is similar in depth.

I've heard Elijah Craig is awesome BFTB. I know George Dickel is. I even like Heaven Hill bourbon mixed with cola, because it has a light Tennessee flavor at an affordable price.

George Dickel (white label) is about 25% cheaper than Jack and about 25% better.

Ballantine's is a great entry level or me no got $ scotch.

I'm currently drinking Jim Beam right out of the bottle. Rare occurrence, that.
