You just compared an operating system to a piece of hardware 😕

I don't know if it'll help any, but I recall reading somewhere that the 950 has 2 pixel pipelines and a 128bit memory interface. I got it off some random notebook forums, so take it with a salt shaker.

Don't be so daft.

I am comparing a Linux PC vs a Mac running OS X. I think it's fairly obvious since you were the only one confused by it.

Especially since you can't run OS X without a Mac and you can't get a Mac without OS X.

I know exactly what you meant 😛 It's just not what you said. There's no reason linux couldn't be run on a mac...

What's daft is even bringing Linux into any response made to a topic started by a guy who knows nothing about computers.

Gigan13, do you know how to Private Message here on Anandtech forums? If so, PM me and I will give you my AIM name. Your best bet is to stay away from the Macs altogether and get a decent PC laptop with a graphics card in it if Guild Wars is that important to you, which it sounds like it is. I can help you find a good one for your price range.

BECAUSE IT'S SARCASM.

The guy asked if Macs are any good with games. I said that Linux is better if that gives him any idea.

A joke. Get it?

(plus guildwars run well on Linux, so if that's all he wants then he can dual boot without having to go and pay for a retail license of Windows XP home. It just costs 15 bucks for a 3 month subscription to Cedega)(although right now linux may be a bit of a PITA on a Macbook.)

Personally I use Linux on a PowerPC Ibook. Now THAT is slim pickings for games.. But I still find plenty to make me happy.

Anybody can get a PC for a decent price that will play guildwars. You can go and find a $600 Dell laptop that will do a decent job.

But none of them will run OS X. 😉

There is a lack of a discrete graphics solution in the MacBook

Then why not buy a MacBook with dedicated graphics?

Oh yeah (slaps forehead), you don't have that option for OSX because you're only legally allowed to run it on hardware Apple says you can.

But...Microsoft is the evil empire for being a monopolist and restricting options for Windows users.

Man, you really don't get it. That's the problem with most of you Linux dudes. Just because you understand Linux doesn't mean everyone else does. Contrary to popular belief, "Just use Linux" is NOT the default answer to every question.

Think about it. Re-read his first post. Does this guy look like he even has a clue what Linux is, let alone how to "dual boot" a system? No he doesn't. So you are trying to suggest a solution that is WAY out of his league. He is a man (or woman) with little to no PC experience, who merely wants a laptop that is uncomplicated and good at games, specifically Guild Wars.

Can you honestly suggest Linux, or even dual-booting in general, to a guy who asks "Is 512 ram good?"

Apparently you don't get it 😉 He never once suggested that the op should actually use linux.

Exactly. I even tell him to dual boot windows if they want to play games on his Macbook.

I think he wanted to have a laptop with OS X on it. He wanted to know if it can play games. This precludes any windows-only laptop.

My conclusion was, which is correct:

The Macbook is a good laptop and it can play the games he wants if he wants to dual boot. If he wants to play more games he would have to buy a Macbook pro which would cost a whole lot more because it has a descrete video card.

Obviously if having a laptop "just to play games on" was the goal then Macbook wouldn't be so hot.

Can you honestly suggest Linux, or even dual-booting in general, to a guy who asks "Is 512 ram good?"

But you don't get that 512 megs IS good. What is so wrong with 512 megs of RAM?

512 megs is plenty enough to do what 95% of people do. Now if you want to play some game like Doom3 you'd probably notice long load times or whatnot, but that's not realy a big deal either. Plus upgrading the RAM is easy, at least on my Ibook it is. It even had a little diagram once you flip up the keyboard.

I suppose it's the same for the Macbook. Apple generally does a good job of making their hardware easy to use. On my ibook the ram upgrade was the easiest thing I've ever done as far as mucking around with computer hardware. It was easier then doing it on a any desktop. The only bad part was finding screw drivers small enough to undo the screws.

Plus boot camp make this sort dual booting thing deal easy and removes the danger or loosing the ability to boot your main OS. There are guides and howtos and it's commercially supported and all that. And it's kinda fun.

A lot of people who normally know very little about computers do that stuff all the time nowadays. Things that would be to complex to do if they were using Windows only. That's what makes OS X better for new users then Linux or Windows.

I think you folks are getting hung up on the 'gaming' and me mentioning linux on the side. It's like clashing with your values complex or something. Nowadays Windows is fairly difficult compared to other things, it's just that everybody is used to it.

That's not to say that OS X is perfect. I don't like it much myself, but I think it's much better then Windows.. Except for gaming that is. Windows has the gaming thing tied up. Otherwise for everything else it's great.
