Is LG CD-RW any good? What about Lite-On?

I am buying a new CD-RW so:

1. How good CD writer is LG CD-RW 52/24X/52X (GCE-8520B) ? in general and specially when it comes to burning different kind of protections? Is LG good choice if you want to burn protected files etc.?

2. Lite-On seems to be quite well liked: how does LG compare to Lite-On? Is LG as good as Lite-On or in what way does LG ?loose? to Lite-On? What does LG lack or is there something very bad about LG in your mind?

3. Would you buy LG or Lite-On (52x models)? Why?

Thanks!

Just looking at them, the black LG is really ugly. The Liteon doesn't have gross markings all over the front of it. I'm going w/ a black lite on.

can't vouch for LG, but i have owned numerous lite-on drives over the years and they have all been excellent

For $19 more (from New Egg) you could get the Samsung SM-352BENB - 52x24x52 CD-RW 16x DVD - which will also get you a 16X DVD player.

Normally I would say LiteOn but the reviews for the 52X say it burns kind of slow and is picky about media. This surprised me because I have a 48X combo that will burn to all the media I have tried and it does it quickly. The LG reviews seem to indicate it is a great drive. LG has always been my second choice because of the ugly bezel(LG symbol) but in this case it seems to be the better drive.

I've had a LG cd-rw for about 8 months now, and so far so good! I can burn anything I want, although the drive I have is a much slower(40x) than the one you are considering.

However, I have heard A LOT of praise for Lite-on and their cd-rw. Plus I have also heard that you can overclock their drives(although I doubt you will overclock the drive you are buying, since it is at max).

In my opinion, just buy the one that is the the cheapest, they are both good drives.

p.s. The LG I have is not good for writing at really low speeds (1x or 2x) as it doesn't have those available on the drive. If you are looking to backup your games etc. I would recommend Lite-on

Another vote for LG!
I had a 32x, and now I have a 52x, fast, nice and quiet drive. I've never had a problem with it.
I never owned a Lite-On though.

Another Plug for LG.

I went with LiteOn on the last system I built, and well I found it to be less than stellar. Picky about media, and not as fast as it claims to be. LG version was easier to install (even on a Windows 98 System).

LG is coming out with some really nice hardware lately.

Lite-On = Makes annoying scratching sound when the CD is spinning. Very picky about medias. Dies after a while. I've had my Lite-On DVD die on me after 4 months and my friend's Lite-On CDRW died after almost a year... Their customer service sucks. You e-mail them, and they write you back in Chinese. They are cheap for a reason.

Go with LG.

LG company history: 1997 - Launched "LG" brand in the world market replacing the former "GoldStar" label.

For those who don't remember, Goldstar produced the cheapest Korean VCR ever made. Mine lasted only a few days after the warranty expired. POS IMHO. Next time you're at the electronics store, look for the cheapest TV, VCR or DVD player and I bet it'll be a LG Electronics product. The only time I ever used a LG cdrom drive was at work, in a cheap business computer (Compaq). It was slow and very loud. YMMV...

On the other hand, I have now had my two Lite-On 16x DVD drives for 2 years now and the only complaint I have is that the tray is loud when ejecting/loading a disc. Otherwise, they are very quiet. When I first got the drives, they would rip DVD's at 16x speed, but after updating the BIOS they will now only rip at a max of 4x.

I also have a 40x Lite-On CDRW (flashed to be a 48x writer) and it writes great, especially with Fuji media.

IMO, you should stay away from LG and go with the Lite-On.

ROFL~!!! Their warranty expired after FEW DAYS? Stop BSing my friend...

LG makes cheap products? What about Philips? LG and Philips are the same company now. They make one of the best electronics in the world and you babble about how they used to make cheap VCR that breaks down after few days? I don't know too much about LG to say anything more, but I know I would choose LG over Lite-On anyday...

Wow, read the post before you criticize, he meant a few days after the warranty expired it broke.

LG would be fine for you, if you also drive a Hyundai (which will also die a few days AFTER the warranty expires!).

LG has nothing to do with Philips. Check out the comapnies HISTORY. Although they are connected with Zenith and 3DO (Both failing companies). Nuff said...

I got my dad a Mitsumi 52.24.52 that really impressed me. It looks nice and conservative (he's got a black one), it has a big LED so it's easy to see what it's up to from a distance, it comes with Nero, and it has Mt. Ranier support. Quiet, too! :) Since the price is similar, keep that one in mind as well.

What about Philips? No offense, but Phillips has had a Jekyl/Hyde persona for a long time as with LG (use to be named Lucky Goldstar).

Philips USA products are/were crappy for a long, long time. Philips Asia or Europe was where the good Philips resided.

What stuff they made that was good was very good but you couldn't get them in North America so I don't know how you can clearly make the LG/Philips parallel. Philips made North America their destination for mid-fi goods for a long time.

Did you know that with the North American market being the dumping ground for mid-fi electronics (Philips) that they cornered the market in the tray mechanisms/Transports for ultra high end cd Transports/Cd players in Europe and in NA? We're talking about 10-20k products. How does that happen?

Anyways, Lucky Goldstar needed to change their name/identity because Lucky Goldstar was synonymous to "crap" with their vcrs, microwaves, home and entertainment electronics. It would seem that with the name change was also a paradigmatic change in their product quality philosphy. Now LG has a good rep with computer goods (monitors, media drives and peripherals etc ...) and have now accrued good pub with their other products like tvs and fridges and washer/dryers and so forth. That's a good thing.

But let's not forget the past. Didn't Santayana say "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it"? Or something like that ...

I own both LG and Lite-on burners. Even though my Lite-on is twice the speed I still prefer my old 16x LG that is very quiet.

Why not spend another $19 for a DVD drive as well - get the Samsung SM-352BENB.

I think you said that already.
He may have a Dell system that came with a DVD already but had a slower cdrw.
He may have already upgraded to a DVD player and now wants to upgrade the CDRW.
He may not watch DVD on the computer.

I was living in Korea back then. there's Samsung, LG (formerly Goldstar), Hyundae, and Hansol as the biggest manufacturers. yes, Goldstar was crap. but now it's not bad AT ALL. the largest company in Korea is Hyundae, then comes SAmsung, and LG. Hansol only makes computer monitors. LG products are pretty good, just don't compare them to the old LG, Goldstar. back then it was super crap. I mean super duper crap.
