Would they be considered abbreviations of a word therefore are not actual words themselves?
They have entered the vocabulary as regular words...would you consider sonar a word? What about radar?

"lab" is even considered a valid word in the board game Scrabble which does not permit abreviations. From The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, 1991 edition:

n pl. -S a laboratory

Sonar and radar are an abbreviation of multiple words not a single word.
