Just like with everything, there's a stereotype that is sometimes true and sometimes not. Assuming anybody who was in a fraternity is a douchebag is just as ignorant as a racial stereotype. For me, there was no point in joining. It wasn't a "special club" that you had to be in... I still hung out with the friendly people that were fraternities, and they had parties that were open to anyone at the school. The houses were old and not maintained so there was no reason to bother.

I rushed a frat my freshman year. Everyone there thought they were the shit. I just rolled my eyes at some of the shit they would say. They liked me but they got pissed off when I turned down their offer to join.

Sounds like a social fraternity. Otherwise, they should have been.

If you think it is the right thing for you go for it.
Joining a fraternity was one of the best things I did in my life.

Yes there is a ton of partying. You can manage that though.
There isn't any homoerotic stuff. It is all made up from people are not Greek.

The semester you join does require a ton of time. Hazing is not that bad anymore. Schools are cracking down on it hard.

Networking wise you will not find a better way to make life long friends and business connections. It is insane how much business I get through my fraternity and random events that I meet other people who are greek there is an instant connection.

I went to UF where the population of Greek students is decently strong. I think it was 35%. You meet an ungodly amount of other students through social functions and it teaches you how to work with different types of people. It also teaches you how to work a room.

You never hear anything positive regarding college fraternities and the associated Greek life.

It seems you get lots of binge drinking, homoerotic activities during the hazing period. Shit like the elephant walk et..

Parties that primarily consist of drinking to a stupor and trying to bang unconscious sorority chicks, rape etc..

Lots of mass cheating.

And other miscellaneous douchebaggery.

Lately they seem to be making the news as well, I guess social media is exposing more of what goes on.

Sounds like the opinion of someone who gets all their information about fraternities from the movies and the news. Have you ever taken the to time to talk to fraternity members to find out why they joined and what it is they like about Greek Life?

As has been mentioned before, fraternities differ from school to school, and within each school, from fraternity to fraternity, and within each fraternity, from chapter to chapter. To try to take a broad brush across every fraternity, and every fraternity member, is quite ignorant.

Are there douches in fraternities? Absolutely. Are there douches in college that are not in fraternities? Absolutely.

Do fraternities put on philanthropic events and raise money for good causes? Yes. Do fraternities provide a built-in networking system? Yes.

Do fraternities throw parties? Heck yes. 😉

Do fraternities have problems? Yes. Do people who are not in fraternities have problems? Yes.

It is really about personal choice, like deciding what school to attend, where you want to live and who you want to hang out with. I was in a fraternity (shocking, I know) as well as many other campus clubs. In my experience, there was much more douchebaggery in the clubs other than my fraternity.

Finally, if you are/were not in a fraternity, why do you even care about them (at least enough to make this thread).

I wish I had gone to Michigan Tech (well, except for the winters). I love Northern Michigan but attended school in the scenic states of Ohio and Iowa.
Yeah I had a good time at Tech. It was a sausage fest (about a 4:1 male:female ratio, now I guess it's about 3:1) but it was a comparatively small but friendly school.

Fun fun fun.

The Winter Carnival is pretty awesome.

<-- lived up there for years before escaping

<adds to stalker list of people with UP ties>
<finds possible reference to SE MI ties>
<not creepy>
:sneaky:
Haha. Always good to meet another Yooper! My brother posts on this board sometimes ("duragezic") too although he's downstate as well now.

And yeah, Winter Carnival was great. Pretty amazing what the groups could create.

No, not all frats and frat members are douchebags. A lot are and it definitely attracts that crowd due to the reputation but near as I can tell (from my outside view) is that it is not 100% douchebag land.

I won't vote I guess, I never went the college route.

I joined the Marines out of high school, then went through a 4 year Tool and Diemaker Aprenticeship after that before it became a dying trade I guess.

Marines were my Fraternity I guess.

I'm not even going to look at the other.

Did vote anyways without looking I suppose.

The reality is quite clear to everyone now.

Joining a fraternity does count as a crime of douchebaggery against humanity.

Indeed. Is it true for 100% of them? No. Is it true for a lot of them, the majority of them? Yes.

Frats are what happen when young men transition out of living from home and are given too much freedom and lack of adult direction/supervision at once. Rather than tapering off they have more or less absolute freedom, and then they abuse it absolutely. They don't know how to behave as responsible adults, and surrounded by other similarly clueless young men eventually end up doing horrible things because there's no one to tell them otherwise.

OP's thread irritates me because I used to think of the same thing out of sheer ignorance.

My wife joined a frat, and she has tons of networking even today. 2 of her best friends are from same frat too. And they're both sweetest girls & successful in life.

Sure, you got your stereotype of slutty chicks or douchey idiots, but I regret not joining one while all I did in college was sit in front my PC and judge like what OP's doing.

Unless things have changed radically since I was in college I don't think your wife joined a frat. She may have a joined a sorority but frats are normally male only.

Oh. Isn't the word frat gender-neutral (although primarily for males)? Like gays covering lesbians.

Am I wrong? Worst yet, wrong on both? Uh oh.
