These are actually two different pronunciations of the same word (or combination of two characters) that mean Japan. While they are theoretically interchangeable, it is my impression that they have a slightly different "flavor." Nippon would be used, for example (but not solely), in a military context and is a little more forceful. Nihon would be used, for example (again, not solely) in a historical context. Nippon is more vigorous and Nihon is more gentle. (If I am mistaken about this, Uco will correct me both vigorously and gently.)

What's sad, is the stuff in there about the other students...yeah that is entirely true for the classes I was in. There were usually 20-25 people in my classes.

10 were usually anime fanatics who knew how to say the dumbest sh!t in Japanese, but couldn't get higher than a 65% on the tests.

5 were the know-it-alls. They would constantly try to correct the teacher and get owned. Also, they have the nasty habit of asking off the wall questions during lessons in order to look cool as if they are so bored because the mateial we're on is too easy for them.

In Japanese 1, there are usually 10 students or so that are too dumb to keep breating at night, let alone do good in a foreign langauge. They usually fail quizzes and tests on hiragana charts. They are also too stupid to drop the damn class and save themselves the GPA killer.

The rest actually want to learn the language, and surprisingly enough...they do quite well.
