I had a few discussion lately about this on another forum, so lets see what the people of atot thinks.

In general.

Let
Mary = a female
Peter = Mary's b/f
John = A guy interested in Mary.

John wants to date Mary, Mary is dating Peter.

Is it wrong of John to make a move? I am not talking about date rape. I am talking about openly asking Mary to go on dates.

Some people think that it is disrespectful and rude to pursue a woman that has a b/f.

Or is that the whole point of dating? To get what the best available option for oneself? Should Mary limit her opportunities because she has a b/f.

Flame on.

No brainer. Why are you even bothering to ask?

There are so many single people out there. Why cause stress and drama by pursuing someone who's already called for?

If Mary is open to it, then Peter's got bigger problems than John making moves on his girl.
As for it being disrespectful, that depends on John and Peter's relationship.

John's free to do as he pleases and Peter's free to kick John's ass if he pleases. Checks and balances.

If Peter = Me, then John = In a gutter clinging for life.

Me too. If Peter is such a great boyfriend, she'll say no. If John can get her, it's only Peter's fault for being boring and unromantic. If there's no ring on her finger, all is fair. Boyfriends and girlfriends come and go.

It all depends on your relationship to Peter. If he's a good friend, then it would be disrespectful. However, if you don't know the guy, then Mary is fair game if she doesn't have an engagement ring.

People are selfish. During the dating period, should one be able to select from the best available "options"?

btw peter and john never met.

hmm...this is a sticky issue. Depends on the situation I guess...My last gf had a boyfriend when I met her, but wasn't exactly happy with him to say the least. She and I started to hang out (met while working for the IT department at school) and eventually she dumped her old bf and we started going out. That said, I didn't put any pressure on her to dump him or anything. I just tried to get to know her and see what happened.

if mary was your girlfriend, would you want John making a move on her?

of course its friggin disrespectful to go out with someone else's gf. she's already going out with someone else! if she says yes, who's to say she won't do the same thing again to the next guy.

That has got to be one of the stupidest philosophies. Why the hell would a guy give a woman a ring when he already knows that she has jumped ship before?
