Also, since I live in the middle of nowhere anyone close enough to use my connection would be conspicuous and also well within rifle range.

Of course it's wrong, though mostly harmless. If someone leaves their house unlocked, so you go inside, sit on the couch, and watch TV for a couple of hours and leave, is it wrong? Yes, though relatively little damage is done in either case.

I just use MAC filters... my network may look unsecured but it denies all but my MAC address.. works very well.

Because MAC addresses can't be spoofed.

The average user in Bum fvck texas where I live can barely even turn on a computer let alone go through all the trouble to hack in to spoof my 1 mac address...

WEP and other encrytion slows down the connect way too much...
and i dont live in an area full of peeps with computers,,
just rednecks and pickup trucks =P

in canada it used to be that if you broadcasted a signal it was legal for anyone to pick it up. i think it has changed now because of satellite providers.

I didn't secure my wirless network with my old router.
Then again, it could barely reach a room 2 walls away, so I don't think I had much to be worried about.

:D hah, and you know it works well because??? People, THIS is why we have a ton of unsecured networks around. It's like saying "I have my own fixed IP address, so no one can haxor me!

not IP adress retard mac address..

and I still can see other clients try to connect to the network through my domain... they arnt getting through to any computers or the internet even if they can get into my WAP becasue all that does is get them to the domain log in where they still have to authenticate to get out to the net or onto my network...

Right, go ahead and use it.

just like it is okay to have a big dish that catches all the unencrypted telecast because they're throwing the signal into your backyard.

Spoofing MAC addresses is trivial. :)

Ignorance is no excuse not to secure your network. If someone uses it then so be it. If a user wants to lock it down they need to read up on how to do it instead of opening the box, setting it up and never reading further on the subject. These are the same types who are infested with spyware, trojans and viruses.

I feel the same way about people at ATM machines. If they really wanted the money, they'd make sure someone can't take it from them.

Yeh, but doesn't that inherently require that the unknown bandwidth stealer would have to know what the MAC address the wireless router allows?

N0cmonkey I know this was sarcasm but I didn't see the parallel. Please clarify.

If people don't bother to keep their things secure, they should be used by someone with the proper knowledge and ability.

Good question. There is a chance that its broadcast.. shrug

99% of people don't know how to "properly" use a computer....Does that mean they deserve to be hacked upon?

People who don't know how to use a car alarm deserved to get their cars stolen?

Just because people do bad things, it doesn't make it right.

/edit: grammar

The MAC is send as part of the packet, it's pretty easy to sniff out.
