Do what's best FOR YOU, give the notice you can that another job came along that you didn't know that they were going to hire you and that's that. I just started a job 3 weeks ago, they are very through with background checking due to what we handle, the girl from corporate says go to the jobsite on Mon. to get my drug-test paperwork and fill out some stuff, meanwhile an hour before I got that call a temp agency had called and asked if I wanted to work at an auto parts place for a few days, I said sure, 3 days of work is better than none. The second call came an hour later, around 6:30PM so I tried to call the temp agency back, but they were gone for the weekend, I didn't want to delay my drug test for 3 days because it would have looked like I was waiting to let something clear out of my system so I didn't show up at the auto parts job on Mon morning. Temp agency calls back 9:00AM Mon all pissed off "WTF, you didn't show", I explained to her what had happened and she came back, "well now we can never send you on another assignment", well shit bitch, I'm 56yrs old I need insurance and a steady income, I had to protect my best interests, I did feel bad about not showing but shit happens. Look at it like this, if a Co. is going to fire you would they give you 2 weeks notice, I doubt it..

Companies have no loyalty to you, so you shouldn't have any to them. I would call them and just tell them what happened. Be professional but don't feel bad about taking s better job. Most companies will not hesitate to get rid of you to save a penny.

Thisaone...

I've always tried to be nice. Like right this weekend, I am trying to be "nice" to a former employer. I'm wiping out this and probably next weekend because HE overextended himself and needs MY help. He's paying me below market wages to help him do a job he's billing the client about 5 times more for. If I had balls, I'd tell him to go f*** himself, but I'm a pussy who can't say "no".

Studies show the biggest assholes who aren't afraid to be douchey get the furthest in life.

I had an experience like this a few years ago. Found a job like I thought would be a good fit, while waiting to start that job got called by another company for an interview. Started job #1, worked two days and realized that while the money was good, I wouldn't be happy there. Called the second place accepted the offer and told the head of HR at company #1 what happened. They were very understanding.

Take the better job... Let the other place know ASAP. They surely have other people who were interviewed. Be cool about it because you may need to get a job with them someday.

take the other job...there is nothing wrong with what you are doing for several reasons. First, the job you accepted likely has plenty of back ups who interviewed for the same position. Second, imagine if the restaurant slowed down for some reason...do you think they are going to give a shit about you? Unlikely. You'll just be another line on their balance sheet that they will be looking to eliminate.

I would call and tell them you had another offer that was better and you decided it was best for you. This happened to me too. Boeing offered me a job and I was going to accept it despite the pay was a lot lower than the job that I was going to leave because they were laying off all the IT department.

The company I work for now offered me better pay despite it being farther from home, a few days before I had to submit all the papers for the other company.

They called and asked why I declined after I sent an email to HR replying about their paperwork. I told them I had a better offer and all the manager said alright.

Companies understand that the first two weeks or so at a new job are very fluid - nobody is going to get that upset if you decide that for whatever reason it's not for you.

Starting at the first new company and then immediately giving your two weeks notice is just idiotic. Spare them having to do the paperwork and legwork getting ready for two people instead of one and let them know ASAP that you have no intention of coming in or staying. Do you really think they'll want to bother training or paying you if they knew your tenure was going to be all of two weeks?

No. Heck, from my experience companies fully expect many fresh hires to leave within a month, despite all the wonderful interviewing process they think they have. (Which is why I believe interviews are useless, but that is another story)

Do it and don't look back.

Will you burn the bridge with the other company? Probably...but do you care?

Yes, ruin your life because you don't want to hurt the other boss's feelings...

Well, incredible things happened. The Exec. Chef job came back & dropped another $5000 a year on top of their offer, plus a bonus % based on catering.
I called the other job & let them know. He didn't sound TOO pissed, but whatever. No way they could ever match this.
Executive Chef Chocu1a, at your service!

Oh snap! & I just noticed my post count. Hail Satan!

Heil!

His lack of emotion probably means he's a bottler or is the passive-aggressive type.

So what if he is pissed, he can to go screw himself if he can't match a better offer in the job market. The market works both ways.

lol@put in 2 weeks notice at a place you don't even work at. Maybe you should offer them some money for the inconvenience you caused too, and offer to take care of their kid for a weekend. Congrats on the position.

That would be the "professional" thing to do. The question for you is "does it matter". Yes, it's an asshole thing to do, but what have you got to lose if they start to get pissy? If the answer is "nothing"....

You could always speak to them and say that you don't want to start, but that you would be willing to give 2 weeks notice. See what they say. They may not want the hassle of someone only working a few days, and just tell you that they'll cancel the job. That's what I'd do if someone in your position called me. It's more hassle than its worth doing anything else.

I find it really fucking weird that so many people are just blind obedient servants to their employers. How can you NOT default on doing what's right for yourself when it comes to your career, business, etc.?

I turned down jobs on a couple occasions after accepting, once was going to work with someone that got me into the company. It happens and you have to do what's best for you and your family. As a hiring manager, I would rather have an employee that really wants the job, rather than someone who feels they are trapped.

I *might* be in the same position as OP. I'm in the top 3 for a position I recently interviewed for and I just found out the place I worked at prior to getting laid off will be opening a position once final budget is in place next week.

I woukd contact the place you accepted the position for and let them know that things have changed since you last spoke but appreciate the opportunity. Do whats best for you & your family. They'll get over it soon enough.

Yeah, I don't understand either, especially when said employers are used to such things.
