Do you find it to be that big of a deal, really? I mean..fire it up, go get the movie & a drink, put the movie in and go. :)

It's a big deal when you are dealing with a 5 year old...the 360+hd-dvd is pretty fast.

learn to parent and put the child in his/her place.

Yeah let's beat the fuck out of a kid we are trying to entertain.

If one is looking to invest in a new machine, I'd buy a blu-ray player or PS/3 at this time. Soon it will be the format for all new releases. It makes no sense to support the lesser format much longer.

When Oppo has a blu-ray player out then the world will be complete.

Yeah I know they are making one, I mean when it actually comes out.

Should be pretty soon. Their preview program just started. Looks like the price will be around $500.

Lol ouch, but I guess coming from Oppo I shouldn't be surprised at the price. I wont buy one for that much though.

Blu-Ray btw.

I don't know how worth it, it really is and I own one.

I think there are some examples of great looking movies on Blu-Ray but some are very hard to tell the difference in.

The player and disc are capable of showing a clear difference but it's all about what you're comparing it to and things like was the DVD transfer done poorly while the Blu-Ray transfer was done with great attention to detail? Take for instance LOTR's DVD's, they look amazing on my 46" 1080P LCD using my PS3 to upconvert them. I'd not even consider rebuying them on Blu-Ray discs, but then there are other movies that look night and day better simply due to the transfer process and clean up that is done to the film.

I don't think it's worth spending top dollar for simple movies that do not show off your screens capabilities, things like comedies or TV shows for example but big action epic movies are worth going with the blu-ray disc over the DVD.

It's a hard sell to the average person though, to most they won't see a stunning difference like there was when comparing VHS to DVD.

This is what I figured. I haven't even seen 1080p, or if I have, was not aware of it. I suspect that most of the 1080p displays you see (e.g. Costco, where I usually see mine for a minute or two) don't have display on them that shows what they are capable of displaying. In any case, I know that it's not going to knock my socks off. I have a 720p projector and HDTV card in my HTPC.

Anyway, I have no idea what Blu-Ray disks I'd like to see, and currently get most of my DVDs from my local library, and I don't know if they even have any Blu-Ray. I figure if I get a player now I'd need a Netflix subscription (or some other) to get access to disks. I'm not going to start buying them. I barely have room for the DVDs I already own.

Ease of use. Especially if we have company over. I hand them the DVD remote, and they can use it. I hand them the PS3 controller, and they look at me like, WTF, how does this work?

I'm personally going to wait for awhile. If sub-$100 drives that don't take forever to load a movie come out before a better tech then I'll hop in.

Some places use pretty poor source video or methods of transferring when it comes to displaying things on their TVs. Other places play movies on them, which is better, but lighting can also be important depending on the TV type.

Does the PS3 controller work by wire connection or does it send IR info? If the latter, I could presumably get my universal remote (MX-700) to learn all the codes and wouldn't have to get the optional remote. I rarely reach for any remote other than my MX-700 in my computer/cineplex room.

Why do the high def players take so long to start up? Seems weird. What's the reason?

For me, absolutely. And I've had a PS3 and HD DVD for almost 2 years now, so you'd expect the library has long since grown.

Consider this though: once you start down that path, you'll likely want to upgrade your sound to take full advantage of what BD has to offer. It's not simply a cost of single player issue.

The PS3 is actually a pretty good price for all that it does, and remains one of the top BD players out there (certainly the least buggy--I've had no problems in two years and several firmware upgrades)

I've paid ~$17 for 70% of the 30 or so BD's that I own. Hell, Band of Brothers was $54 on release! It was $80-100 on DVD for maybe....4 years? or however long it was out until the BD was released.

Again, BD is much cheaper at this time in its age than was DVD from its release. Hardware and software. Staggering how prices have dropped, actually.

You have to shop a bit, but deals are just about everywhere.

Yes. and it (likely) plays your DVDs better than your current DVD upscaler. If you're really, really into games, though, it's not the best gaming console in terms of selection.

I find the Two Towers DVD upscaled on my Plasma nearly unwatchable. such a horrible transfer, that one is.

Bluetooth.

there are a few USB IR remotes with dongles for the PS3 that can be used for Universal remotes. That's what I use, but only two so far can be programmed to actually turn the PS3 on (these are $100 compared to the $20 IR remote. $80 premium, for one extra function, is not worth it. You have to put the disc in anyway, so it's not like turning it on via remote is needed...)

I think I'm skipping Blueray. I think streaming video is going to overtake Blueray much the way mp3's took over CD's. I know I haven't rented a movie in 4 months because of Netflix.

I'm not into games. It would be nice if it were a good gamer (I could check that out!), but if it saves me money because no gamer in his right mind with get it, so much the better.

Oh, then I would need the optional remote to get IR codes for my universal remote, right?
