Is it worthwhile to get a Blueray player yet?

I just got a new HDTV and was thinking about getting a new player. I did a brief look around and all the Blueray player are still pretty pricey and, from the sounds of the reviews, pretty buggy. Are there even that many movies out there yet and does it make a difference? Worth the money?

I spent ~$99 on an HD DVD/bluray combo drive and think it was well worth it, even though I don't have an HDTV yet.

I watched some movies on a buddy's 32" 720P and it's incredibly clear.

If you have a ton of DVDs and aren't anal about "ultimate" picture/sound quality, I'd wait until the sub-$100 players and $10/$15 discs.

Blu-ray is quite a bit better than DVD for many movies.

The newer players start up faster than the older ones. Mine takes about 20 seconds or so and it has been flawless. I have the Sony BDP-S350.

I got a PS3 primarily for the blu-ray. I say its absolutely worthwhile. There are tons of movies out, just take a look at amazon. As for as buggyness, the PS3 is rock solid. Can't say about standalones, never used any.

IMO it's worthwhile, particularly if you have a home theater audio system (the lossless audio formats on blu ray are just as impressive as the visual improvements). It really depends on how much you'll use it. I personally think the Samsung BD-P2500/2550 offers the most compelling feature set of any player on the market right now - it does BD, streams Netflix, and upscales DVDs and non-HD Netflix content with the best upscaling chip available in any sane price range. The 2550 (only available at BB) also streams Pandora.

Do you find it to be that big of a deal, really? I mean..fire it up, go get the movie & a drink, put the movie in and go.

Teach them patience! Does it take longer to start up than it takes to rewind that VHS tape that was put away un-rewound? We survived.

I never put the tape away un-rewounded. Had a dedicated rewinder. Shit I was buying widescreen vhs tapes...

Right now I would pickup a Sony BDP-S350, or a Panasonic DMP-BD35 if you can find one and decide to get Blu-ray. There are some new Panasonic players coming out soon that are going to replace the DMP-BD35 and the higher end model.

If you want games as well the PS3 is always a good option for Blu-ray.
