Is it worthless to apply to a company if they have a minimum GPA req?

I'm currently sitting on a 2.9 coming into my 4th year, and a job I'm looking into says they require a 3.2.

Waste of time or not? Is there anything I can say to help my cause?

You could send in your resume, but they'll probably pre-screen based on GPA and yours will end up in the trash. If they don't have a lot of resume submissions (maybe they only get two for one position), you could stand a chance based on your other qualifications (ie: you have a 2.9 GPA but a TON of other activities like student government, volunteer work, etc).

I would apply anyways. Do something that will really impress them. Not all the people who have low GPAs would make poor employees.

apply anyway. experience > grades.

i had a 2.81 going into my last 2 semesters and i pulled a 3.01 at the end. i say try your absolute best. a 3.1x > 2.9x

if a company only uses GPA as a number to screen potential employees, i wouldn't want to work there.

A good company looks at how well-rounded the whole person is instead of just a number.

you're pretty stupid if you don't get a 3.2 gpa in sociology/communications/poly sci/[insert non-science major here]

you are pretty stupid if that is way how you judge people. You are also more stupid by classifying all non-science majors as being stupid.

I tend to agree.

I have done better in life than most of the people who had higher GPAs than me.

If this is a non-academic position then I would seriously question working there in the first place. A company fixated on gpa will probably introduce one another with their name and gpa. Probably have your gpa imprinted on your badge.

My job description says that it requires a minimum of 5 years experience to apply. I got the job fresh out of college with no prior work experience and a mediocre gpa.

You can't get the job if you don't apply.

You should apply, but chances are you won't get an interview. However, if you have a connection in the inside, it'll be worth it to have him/her refer you.

Is this for a job during your 4th year ? If so apply now. Clean up good and do it in person if possible so Personnel can get a look at you.

If the job is for after graduation, do what you can to up the average this semester before you apply.

The only way any of this can be a waste of time is if you already have a better job.

The big companies in the UK (accounting firms, consultancy firms, finance, banking firms) more often then not need a 2:1 degree and if you don't have it you won't get an interview.

It is just a 'filter' to wittle away the thousands of candidates they get.

I got a 2:2 so I got the shaft end of the stick...but hopefully this job will pull for me :)

I have 'heard' of someone 'lying' that they got a 2:1 when they got a 2:2 and later told them they made a mistake or put it down by mistake. The HR guys corrected it and she was still given the job. This is VERY dodgy as they can later fire her for lying on her CV. The banking firms DO NOT like this and I was told in a presentation that they would fire you asap. She went with a consulting firm.

GPA requirements usually apply to fresh grads. Obviously they are not going to hunt down a GPA of someone with 10 years experience...

If you don't have experience you will need to find a way to avoid ending up on the cutting room floor.

The reason for this kind of thing is people today pay or just spam the hell out of their resumes to any company. I work in a mortgage company, we were looking for a new IS candidate. Requirements are mortgage and programming experience.

I would say maybe 1 in 30 were close to a match. Half included cover letters for a totally different position.

Why not? Even if they trash your resume, you're no worse off than you are now, which is just not having a job with them.

The possible reward is far superior to the effort required.
