Is it worth wildly overpaying to get a unique/'right' house?

I personally think the shortage of cash that you would experience every month would stress you out more than having 6 garages would relax you.
To be clear this was more a 'is it worth possibly flushing the over market value portion of your offer to get something that uniquely fits your desires' question than an affordability question.

There is no question of affordability.

That was actually one of the big points in favor of this place - a six car garage and the ability to fill it with fun things.

Where I live there are rarely bidding wars.

That said, the house I now own had only been on the market 8 days when we made our offer. Apparently other offers had already been made, but they must have been lowball offers. We paid only 94% of the asking price (along with non-monetary considerations*), but we paid 116% of our max budget.

We had looked around for a new house for over a year, and had never found anything we really liked. When we saw this house, we knew we had to have it and were prepared to go in big if necessary. I've never regretted that decision, and if necessary we probably would have gone higher.

*turns out we knew the seller, who loves the property. We came to a handshake agreement with him that he could still come up & use our property for access to the adjoining National Forest so he could continue to hike/camp/etc.

It has a 1000 sq. ft. unfinished basement.... 😉

A bit OT but a rant nonetheless...

When are the people that list these pictures going to be sued for misrepresentation? They use ridiculous filters to stretch the interior shots of rooms to make them look bigger. A dead giveaway is appliances and floor board width. The HDR being blown out is bad enough but when the images are stretched like that, you're not looking at an accurate representation. Far from it.

My preference is to have a place off the road. Even if the road is not traveled much, I'd never have the front of my house closer than 100' to the mailbox!

damn, nice. leaves me hope that there really are some honest blokes out there trying to actually help people buy houses, rather than just jack up the price for the commission. ...I actually think my guy did OK by me, too.

$444.444k....I'd be worried, thinking he'd just add another 4 in there, hoping you would be too distracted to notice that 2nd comma. That sounds like something I would try to pull, though. 😀

There are quite a few honest blokes out there working real estate. I do and I met a lot of people along the way that are quite ethical about the whole process. It's also about playing the long game - jacking up the price of a house by 20K is going to get you peanuts in commissions vs what you'll get from the referrals instead from happier clients.

Split the bays are rent them out as storage. I just bought a house where I could do that. The thing has an attached 2 car garage and detached 3 car garage. it's ridiculous!

My sister just bought a house in St. Louis. She was given a showing the day after it listed.
Then she made an offer the day after her showing - $240k.
Offer was accepted by owner minutes before the next prospective buyer showed up for a house tour with an offer in his hand.

That's a two-, maybe three-day window it was for sale.
I'm sure the seller thought "crap, should've asked for more."

That garbage does not look appealing to me actually. It's worn down considerably and it WILL BE a big money/time sink. I'm surprised you're paying $50K EXTRA just to have this. But I guess that's how everyone's different.

Yes but it is perfect to house his slave sex dungeon after a little soundproofing project.

Yes, just behind that 6-car garage is a cemetery.. 😱😵

The owners are laughing their asses off and can't believe they are getting over their asking price for their haunted ass house.

Btw, I really hope that image isn't orientated north.

At least the neighbors look nice...

It's deceptive on street view. I thought the same thing but looked at it anyway because the maps said it was not in or even near a flood zone.

What you can't tell easily from the aerial photos is there is ~80 feet of elevation difference between the man made, level controlled reservoir and the cemetery. The maximum recorded water level of the reservoir is 75 feet below the elevation at the house.

I thought it was a major river branch.... a man made controlled reservoir is a different beast altogether. The wild Weather these days would make nervous to live too close to a river.
