Is it worth wildly overpaying to get a unique/'right' house?

It's not tall enough as is, the roof will need to be raised to double stack or proper two post. Future project I'm sure.

Congrats on the house. But many cities aren't keen on modifications to non-compliant structures. You may not get a permit to do squat, beyond general maintenance.

Yeah I would find out this stuff before you buy. Sometimes old stuff is grandfathered in but then you're not allowed to touch it. Cities now days are getting more and more nazi about what you can do on your own property. I look at all my neighbours they have sheds in the back on slabs. I was not allowed to do that, because of easement. Only legal spot was right in the middle of the yard. I built it on 6x6s so that I can move it in the future with jacks and a rail system as I'll eventually put it in the illegal spot where it belongs once we get a council that is not as nazi. Or I might get so used to having it there that I'll end up leaving it.

That sucks. Dealing with unreasonable city government is the fucking worst. Good idea moving it after the fact. I doubt your neighbors would care.

Our zoning code is comically strict for a pre-war city, but the board of zoning is really lax on the rules. The city is desperate for more density. So if I wanted to build a granny flat, the city would happily rubber stamp the variances I'd need to build it. Things like an oversized garage are questionable since they don't contribute to property tax (or income tax for a rental unit), so it' be a tougher sell.
