Is it worth upgrading my s939 with a faster cpu?

Until there are more DirectX10 games available, I won't upgrade anything that I already have. Gaming is usually the demanding process that most people want to be setup for. I have plenty of games that I haven't even played yet. Just can't see paying a premium for a GPU when there isn't much for it to take advantage of.

IMHO

I'd say overclock what you have first. If you haven't maxed out the ram and CPU yet, why upgrade?

Check my sig. It's already got a hefty overclock. I have a Zalman on there now that really didn't help me since I really haven't bumped the voltages.

3500+ (2.2GHz) -> 2.5GHz = "hefty overclock"? Not even for an old Clawhammer.

If you have that Zalman fitted, then try a small voltage increase & put it to good use.

I agree that 300mhz is nothing. Especially if you didn't even touch the voltage. I have an X2 3800+ and without voltage adjustments can bring to to 2.4. I've taken it to 2.9 before, but the temperature is unruly. If you are planning on upgrading anyhow, you have nothing to loose- play with the dividers, and the voltages a bit.

Nope, that was it with this one. Even with voltage bumps. I didn't get lucky enough to have the fx clawhammers with the disabled cache.
Anymore voltage and it was rather unstable.

But for you....I'll say it was mild then. 😉

😀

Shame, but I'm sure a dual-core Opteron could do with some of that sweet Zalman-lovin' to keep it cool when you push 3GHz. 😎

you need 2GB of ram plain and simple. see what you can find a another 1GB of pc3200 for and find a used x2 and then wait until the next gen comes out. if you are patient enough you will find a deal, hell i found this x2 4200 i now have in my rig for ~$30 🙂, so i put my x2 3800 in my home server (which did 2.5GHz stock V no problem), so deal are around, just keep your eyes open.

I just bought a 939 X2 3800+ a couple months ago. It's running happily at 2.6 GHz on default voltage with a crappy heatsink. It's a pleasure... anti-virus updates don't slow down my gaming anymore... the occasional video encode takes half the time it did before with my 3500+ @ 2.4 GHz... and as more multi-threaded games come out I won't be left too far behind. My next upgrade will either be a video card or a whole new quad core setup.
