I'd be in the range for a midrange setup something at no more than 200 per card for an SLI setup and might even add in a phys-x card on top of that. I have 2 16x PCI-e slots and a singlwe 8x.

Right now i have two 8800GT's running SLI with a Q6600 CPU running on an XFX 680i SLI motherboard. I think this board will actually do TRI-SLI.

Anyhow, the 8800GT's are getting to be almost 2 years old and its about time to update this rig.

My question - is it even worth going with something newer, or is an 8800GT sli setup just fine? Additionally, would I see any benefit from adding a Phys-X card or by adding another 8800GT to the mix?

Obviously if you have to ask that, then I'm going to have to say your fine.
 
As others have mentioned, it depends on a lot of factors:

1. What games do you play?
2. What resolution do you game at?
3. Are you happy with your performance now?

I was debating upgrading the graphic card in the system in my sig, but I decided to go ahead and buy a Dell U2410 now and maybe ask the wife for a new graphic card for Christmas. Honestly, my 8800 GTS works fine and I can play all the games I have on high settings and high resolutions, but I think that it is going to run out of steam once Crysis 2 gets here, along with some other games I'm looking forward to buying.
 
Games I play currently - DA: Origins, Alien vs Predator, Left for Dead 2, and sometimes Crysis. I haven't really picked up anything newer for my gaming rig yet, because nothing has really been coming out that's grabbed my attention.

I guess I'm asking because I have a few bucks to throw around, but if I'm not going to see much benefit with some new titles coming out in the next few months, I was going to upgrade my jeep instead. ;-)

I just didnt want some great game coming out and being stuck with a crappy video card that will barely run it at 1024x768.
 
With reduced settings you should be fine with all of your games. AVP will play better on a 5850 or GTX470 or better to be sure. I personally would hold pat with what you have if your getting acceptable framerates.

I remember my q6600 rig with sli 8800gt's. Those were the good ol days 😛
 
I've got the same setup as you and I am going to hold steady with whave I've got E6600, 2 X 9800GT SLI for a while.

Actually I may buy a Geforce GT 240 to offload PhysX since I'm about to buy Batman:AA and I hear thats the best way to run it.

I only play at 1600x1200 on a CRT, however.
 
Do your games just not run fine for you any more? You've waited this long and I think you should wait a little longer until the refreshes come out later this year as a more mature Fermi is what everyone is waiting for.
 
That board wont' do xFire?

If not I say you should put your right foot in and pick up a GTX470 now.

Then put your right foot out and grab another GTX470 later.

And then do the hokey pokey,
that's what it's all about!
 
no, my board will not do xfire. it will do tri SLI with 1 card running 8x, or I can run SLI + PhysX @ 8x.

Are the GTX 460's better bang for buck than the 470?

I currently get frame rates that are just fine. I guess that's why I'm even asking - my system really hasnt felt too worked. I upgraded last time for Crysis, and it plays that just fine.
 
The GTX465 is NOT a better bang for the buck than the 470.

You get less than HD 5830 performance at the same power consumption as GTX 470.

Avoid the GTX 465 all the reviews say it is nothing more than a GTX 285 with DX11.

Well he said 2 GTX 460 so he is probably talking about the GF104 variant that is supposed to be released sometime in the future.

If it is better bang or not I don't know as the card doesn't exist yet for us consumers.
 
If you're thinking "upgrade" then the poisen already has you, few can resist it's affects.

You could get much better performance in the games you list by upgrading your graphics, since your board does sli and not xfire and you appear to be a fan of multi GPU setups, I'd suggest a 470 now with a 8800gt for phyx as an antidote. Later add another 470 for sli goodness.
 
Dude the 8800GT 512MB is on par with a Radeon 4830 and as such is still a great card, but the 256MB version is notably slower.

If you're sporting the 512MB version I would definitely say hold on to it unless it's just unbearably slow for you...if you have the 256MB version then you have a better reason to upgrade and it'd be worth considering if you really feel that it's delivering unsatisfactory performance.

If you want to stick with nVidia, now might be a good time to upgrade since the new cards just came out, or you could wait til they release mainstream parts. If you want to go with ATI, now would be a great time to upgrade, unless you feel like waiting for a refresh, but there's no reason not to buy ATI now.

I can't max out Crysis even on Crossfire 5870s.

It completely depends on what you intend to be running.

768mb ram? wow last I checked it was 1gb.

I was really saying is to wait a little since 2 8800gt's are still ok for now.
2 gts 460's might be a nice COOL combo with performance of a gtx 470.

My FPS in Dragon age nearly doubled when I went from a C2DE4300@3ghz to a Q6600@3ghz. The engine really benefits from quad core.

Shame i'm havin hard time giving the game another go.
