Is it worth upgrading Athlon II X4 635 --> Phenom II x4 965

For $90-100, if they offer them anymore, a G3258 combo would be a much better investment.

if you really need CPU performance I think even the PII X4 is to little at this point, if you don't, the 635 is more than enough...

maybe for gaming, a few games could greatly benefit from the l3, but still...
I think $70 is to much for a PII X4...

$70 buys you a modern FM2+ CPU, and is nearly enough for an i3. I'd consider the Phenom if it were closer to $30, I think.

Can you back up a bit?
I was only really interested in a plug and play 2 min. install.

This is not for games, just a basic home PC for internet, video, email, etc.

I think this is the fastest CPU that swaps into the 570.
These other chips require a new MB?

Any more than that, I might as well just get a new PC.
Then again, a new MB/CPU basically is a new PC, if I reuse my HD/RAM/Perifs, etc.

I think I need the small case size for the 570.
Ok, let's say I decided to swap out my MB/CPU for something better.
What are some options?

Depends on your price and preferences. AMD's socket FM2+ and Intel's socket 1150 are good choices, though 1151 is Intel's latest.

FM2+ has some excellent quad core CPUs with good integrated graphics (you can toss the noisy and power hungry discrete GPU) for under $100.

Socket 1150 has Pentiums and Celerons for <$60 which probably wouldn't be a huge upgrade, considering you'd be going from 4 slow cores to 2 fast ones, Core i3's for just over $100 which would be a very significant step up, and i5's and i7's above that. I consider an i3 to be the sweet spot for an entry level system right now but you'll find a lot of dissenting opinions on what's best in this price range.

Another option is a prebuilt or barebones. Intel sells PCs that are the size of your hand which have high-end Core CPUs, , lacking just a hard drive and RAM, in the area of $200-250.

I would not go with this upgrade for $70. You already have a quad core Athlon at not too far behind the Phenom in clock speed. It'd be an upgrade for sure, but not a big enough one to justify that much money on an older used CPU.

Phenom II still sell at a high price because they're good performers compared to FX, my X6 1090T CPU could sell for $180 no joke

I think it's only because a lot of people still have old am2/am3 boards and slower CPUs and can't buy anything new for it, the cheaper newer fm2+/Am3+ stuff is better.

This will fit into my tower?
My existing MB is 04GJJT (Intel LGA775 screws)

Also, does the existing OS get affected if you swap a MB/CPU ?
I want to preserve my SSD OS (Win7), CDROM, etc...

Can I reuse my existing RAM ?
(4 x 2GB) PC3-10600 DDR3 RAM

Since that is a dell, I'd recommend only using what they recommend
Check and see if they have a website section with bios updates and a list of supported mem/cpu
best to play it safe.

What i told to a friend circa 2009/2010 when he asked me about his build :

In 4 years, perhaps 5 at worst, you will have X6s for half the price that you paid for your 90€ Athlon II X4 2.6, will be a worthy and dirt cheap upgrade...

Personally, I dont think I would bother to upgrade. I would either live with it or get a modern prebuilt pentium or i3 desktop or even a 350.00 laptop. Doesnt sound like you really need 4 cores, so a Haswell pentium or i3 should perform nicely and run cooler, quieter, and use less energy. You might try to get one from Dell or Lenovo outlets. Sometimes they have really great deals.

Yeah, get a cheap pre-built, with OS. (Preferably Win7 64-bit.)

I snagged an Acer "refurb" (unsold stock returns from retail? looked and smelled totally new) with an i3-4160 CPU, for $220 + tax/ship. Win7 64-bit included. Seemed like a deal. (That's how much the CPU + OS would cost alone, if I had to build.)

In that case, stick with what you have. The Phenom II won't be that much of an upgrade, not enough to notice with your use case. Maybe upgrade to 8GB RAM, or get a faster wireless NIC.
