Is it worth to upgrade from a Tbird 700MHz to a Duron 1.2GHz?

You can check my rig in my sig. Is it worth for some overall office stuff? I'm on a very tight budget.
 
hell no.

save the pennies for another month if you have to and pick up at least an XP 1600+

might as well get a noticeable performance gain from upgrading for not much more...

i've had similar urges like yours...i fulfilled it once - regretted it...returned merchandise - felt better...bad scenario.
 
unless your board is not capable of taking the new XP processors, I would go with the new cpu...it is like a 500 MHz upgrade. almost double what you have. and the 1.2GHz are probably cheap too.
 
OK, so I think I'll get a whole new computer in 3 months, cuz if it's not worth it, then it's not worth 😉

My roommate is going to upgarde his tbird 700 system to a duron 1.2. He has an Asus A7V and it may take a 1.3, but people have reported problems i guess. He also has 768megs of pc133, so he said he plans on upgrading the vid card to a Geforce 4 MX, or ti (whatever the lowest one is) to hold him over for a while. I think a comp like that will be plenty fast until Athlons start hitting at least 2.5Ghz or hammer comes out.
 
Not for Office Applications. A T-Bird 700 is more than enough for that (I'm on a Duron 800 and It's perfectly fine). If you're looking for a cheapo upgrade, how 'bout more memory (for 2K or XP) orf a faster HD (If you don't have a 7200RPM drive).

EDIT: Fyi, your board can run the XP's (and Durons 1GHz and above) with the latest BIOS. Also, MSi K7T Pro2-A has been tested by Ace's hardware a couple times with a Athlon XP.
 
dam man atleast you can upgrade....i was making quick decisions and i ended up buying a abit ka7 with 700 mhx proc with 200 fsb the stupi* shi* can only take .25 micron processors and i dont even know what is the fastest .25micron proc out there!

Thunderbird 1.4GHz 14x multiplier on 200fsb.
 
The KA7 was a slot A board... the t-bird 1.4 was an .18 micron socket A chip...IIRC, the fastest .25 micron chip (all .25 micron chips were socket a athlon classics, right?) is the 1 ghz athlon classic model. Would be nice if they made sockets tho' 😉
 
Hmm, MSI K7T Pro 2a board? Isn't that based on the KT133A chipset? If it is, before buying a new chip, try running the FSB at 133mhz then having the proc at 733, 800, 866, 933, or even 1ghz. Overclocking will show you what you can expect from a faster chip 🙂 Heck, Durons are cheap 😀
