Is it worth the wait for the R600 to come out for prices to drop on the 8800?

I want the 8800GTX, but I'm not spending the 550 that it currently sells for.

If the R600 comes out within the next 2 to 3 weeks, does anyone foresee the price of the GTX to drop to 450?

I'm looking at eVGA 8800GTS 640MB right now, but the performance of the GTX is a lot better...

Hmm it's hard to say, wiat till the R600 and see if it outperforms the 8800 GTX for less is the ebst option considering were so close to the launch now, I hope.

I read a rumor that they are going to intro the price at $500. If so, nVidia will need to lower their price or risk not selling many of their cards.

I have been waiting forever for R600 in the hopes price drops do happen.

I may very well end up with an 8800 or 8900, but at current 8800 GTX pricing ($675-725 CND), no way.

Seems ATi has almost always been a better deal in Canada though...so hard to say.

Personally, I'm gonna go with either of these options:

1) Wait and try and snag a HD2900XT for around $350-$375 a couple weeks after launch

or

2) Get a good deal on an 8800GTX or GTS 640mb when the G80 fire sale starts on ebay

:)

MM.. HD2900XT will be a very tempting offer to all the proffesional workstation users that use CAD , Maya ... ect. Why pay $2500 for an FX5500 when you could get something way faster for $500. Will have to wait and see. Also i think 2900XT is suppose to retail for $399 and 2900XTX should retail for $499. OEM version of 2900XTX2 should retail for $600ish since its an dual gpu card.

If your current GPU plays the games well enough in the meantime, there's no reason not to wait until the R600 hits.

Personally my 7900GT KO plays everything at 1680x1050 well enough for now so I'm content to wait until the 8800GTS 640MB comes down under $350 (which the release of the ATi XT should do), or a card of similar performance level with at least 512MB of RAM and a quiet cooler is released by either company at $350 or less price point.

I'd wait at least a week. By then you should be able to tell whether ATI is pulling another "just kidding!" with some level of certainty. After that, I think its late enough in the game now that it'd probably pay off to wait for the new cards to come out and place some price pressure.

If you can wait that is. I got a raise and decided reward myself with a totally overpriced video card. :p

I currently have a Leadtek card and I think the build is ******. It works, but the fan bkoe after about 6 months. Not going that route again.

I think the card is creating issues because the computer randomly shuts down in both XP SP2 and Vista. I tested the ram and the what not and it looked fine with Prime.

I'm doing an entire barebone upgrade: mobo, vid, processor and ram
The RAM is already shipped, the mobo is the ASUS PB5 Deluxe and the Processor a E6400 have been selected. Just debating on the video card now, and as I see it, the eVGA 8800GTS is a nice one, but if its going to drop in price in a week, i dont want to get screwed in price before I even have the system assembled...

Well, Dailytech.com said the R600 benchmarks were poor, but their test may have been frelled up. If the R600 isn't superior to the G80 line for gaming, then I don't think you will see much more of a price drop from nVidia.

As far as a date, AMD said in their conference call that "we don't do soft launches." (dunno if that is historically true) They said May15th latest for computer makers. Not sure if we can buy single cards by then as well.
