is it worth replacing my sontata 380w true power supply with the 350w forton aurora?

The Antec Trues are also pretty quiet. How about a Zalman 400W, complete the Zalman quiet case solution? I'd stick with it a year or more at least, get some value from it. You can always use accoustic foam if noise is THAT much of a concern. You can also install a quiet 120mm case fan on those IIRC, and that would be more worthwhile.

The Aurora with the 120 is supposed to be very quiet, more so than the Antec. (Both are quality PS's). It's also half the price of the Zalman.....

The truepower psu's are very quiet. And the true380s in the Sonata is a single fan model making it slightly more quiet than a retail true380. The 120mm exhaust fan is what generates the most noise in my Sonata.

The psu is definately the part that makes the most noise in my Sonata.

You should ho to SilentPC review forums and take a look. There's a big thread about the Fortron 350 with 120mm fan that does not have active pfc. There's also a thread about the Seasonic. And finally check out their recommended list.

This is an excellent thread by kenaf about his Sonata.

I think there will be a difference. The question is; how big a difference, and is the difference worth the cost of an extra psu.

Why not just replace the fan in the TruePower with a Panaflo or Vantec Stealth?

in almost every p/s i've seen that has a connector it's been a 2 pin. otherwise it's just soldered to the board. i've snipped them (being VERY careful and having lots of experience doing so <- don't blame me disclaimer) and just run a four pin out thru the hole with the other wires in the past. i haven't been in a true power so i'm not sure what you'd be looking at.

I was wondering the same thing. So I bought a Zalman ZM400A from excaliberpc.com. It's going to be here tomorrow. From the reviews of the PS it sounds like a great unit. I've have used other Zalman products and they make some real quality stuff.

Maximum PC covers some fans and power supplies in it's newest issue. They recommend the Vantec Ion and the Nexus NX-4000.

Seems a bit hokey to me. Why not just solder/heat shrink the wires from the fan to the connector? Did it putting panaflos in my Enermax and worked just fine :)

apparently you've never seen my solder jobs. :p but yeah, that'd work as well, probably better if you can do it.
