Is it worth paying another $170 for a Geforce 3 over a Geforce 2Pro 64 meg ?

Hi
I am about to upgrade from my voodoo 5500 and read some great reviews on the MSI Geforce 2 Pro 64 megs. Newegg has it for $123.00
The Geforce 3 is about $290.00 Is it worth the extra money. My main games right now is UT and Max Payne.
Thanks

UT isn't very demanding in terms of graphics. So either would be fine.

As for Max Payne, the GF3 is obviousy better. But it really depends. With 170 dollars, you could get the Hercules XP Gamer. If you have an AMD system, you could get a Tbird 1.4GHz.

It depends on what you are doing in long term. The GF3 will go down in price, most likely, after the better versions of the GF3 (whatever they may be called...) come out.

Thats just my opinion. I'd get the Pro, as I'd rather use the extra $170 for other stuff. But that's just me...

Pro's are really good deals right now, but with new video boards soon to come, I would recommend to play the waiting game. $150+ price gap between the Pro and the GF3 is a real bummer. Perhaps a GF3 MX might be worth a buy. Perhaps even the Radeon 7500?

I just "upgraded" my Prophet2 Pro to a GF3. Was it worth it?
Maybe.
The 2d is better, in my opinion.
Runs games faster, FSAA a lot faster.
Has some features upcoming games may/may not use.

I guess it depends on how long you're planning to keep the card, if you really want to upgrade now, and how much money you have. I think if I have the GF3 still in a year it will be a more viable card than the Pro.

BTW- since when is ~$300 too much for a leading edge VGA?! I paid that for my Voodoo1, my Voodoo2, my TNT1, etc.. The V5 was $300. at it's release and for a long time after, and when you compare what it brings to the table vs a GF3, it's kind of like comparing a BMW 9 series to a Yugo.

*shrug* with the life cycle at the moment of video cards, I would never buy the 'latest' purely its always priced for demand. At the moment the GF2 Pro will run most games without a hitch for a hell of a lot less $$ Go for the Pro and save the money for something else, its a case of what do i NEED or what do i WANT

I think it depends on how much money you have to burn, and what features are important.

I thought the gf2 pro was fine for my wife, but I am a bit pickier and grabbed a gf3 (both gainward), and to me it was worth it.

no complaints on either card.

might add tho, you can get a 1.4ghz amd AND a motherboard (ecs) for $170ish.. perhaps that would put it into better perspective. spend another 30-$40 and you'd have a ddr system (or you could still use your sdr ram in the ecs as well)! :D

Icemave:
Your reply makes no sense. You don't NEED even a Pro to game, why not a $50 MX? Everything is a matter of perspective, and like I said, in a year the GF3 will be a lot better card to have than the Pro.

I'd play the waiting game, your V5 5500 should'nt be fairing too bad in Max payne and should be kicking ass in UT (since it's a glide game). Wait till the R8500 and GF3 ULtra to come out to push the current prices down, and see what happens then. At least that's what i'd do. I wouldn't really buy anything now, since the Palamino's are just around the Corner, the next gen vid cards, the audigy sound cards, etc. Guess that's not relevant, but just a point i wanted to show.

A Pro will handle UT and Max Payne just fine. However you should wait a few weeks for prices to drop; they might drop low enough to justify buying a GF3.
